Established in 1952 by Mr Basil Leonard, it all started from a simple basic unit which this powerful brand was created from through a number of achievements reached in construction, development, engineering and mining within Southern Africa. The company has overcome many obstacles e.g. economic recession but reached many milestones too; In 1987 Basil Read got listed on the JSE, then it received a landmark empowerment deal in 2005. The companies Turnover in 2008 was R5 billion. Then being listed as one of the Top 100 companies survey in the Sunday Times, in 2008/09. With that in mind, they are planning to reach a turnover of R10 billion in Global construction group by the end of this year (2013). Their Vision is “to build an international construction, engineering and related services group with a focus on emerging markets, operating in the mining, energy and infrastructure sectors.” They regard their employees as their greatest assets, nurturing unity, team spirit and respect for one another, always focusing on the main vision of the company. Racism is one of the bad things that is happening at Basil Read. if you're a black, I recormmend you stay away from Basil Read. its an 'only white' business.

In the early years BASIL READ was recognised as a market leader in the Civil Engineering and Mining sectors. The training provided to young engineers and technicians on the job was exemplary and considered the best in the market. Many of the Basil Read trainees are today Captains of Industry in their respective fields. Their systems, safety, communication and work ethic I would rank with the best Contruction Companies in the world. You will find that on large scale projects throughout Africa and indeed elsewhere, members of the project staff that received their initial training with Basil Read. Personally I have endless respect for the company and still refer to them and use their systems on projects that I am involved with currently.

(Blasting & Excavating) I was working for them. I must say, I was happy there. I always want to go to work. If I could, I will go back, but just in a different department. If I can say, that is the best company to work for, really. Some of us do make silly decisions in life and don't face the problems but yes, that is in the past. Life go on. So, Basil Read go for it all the way.
