What does an auctioneer do?

An auctioneer is often seen presenting the objects up for bidding. They provide description of the object or product that’s up for bid and announces every bid coming in. The auctioneer manages the entire bidding process and declares the winning bidder when the highest bid is not outbid. But aside from presenting objects, an auctioneer also examines the objects to learn more about it before presenting the object for bidding as well as taking care of the payment process.

Typical work activities of an auctioneer?

An auctioneer has to carefully present the object so that it could raise the highest possible price. Because of this requirement, they have to meet the seller and examine the object. Auctions for popular pieces of art don’t usually require a lot of introduction but smaller auctions require extensive introductions to entice more people into bidding. Auctioneers would also take part of the post bidding process wherein they present the object to the winning bidder while receiving the bid. An auctioneer can also take other roles before, during and after the auction such as cataloging, managing payment terms

Training and education requirements?

There is no absolute education requirement for auctioneers but they should have excellent public speaking skills. There are also individuals who have a background and degree in art and use this knowledge to properly present objects in auction. Different types of auction will also require a different degree or experience in the said industry. Training for this type of work is usually based on experience. Those who have worked with different auction houses can work as auctioneers as they become more and more familiar with the job. There are also auction schools where a full training lasts for four weeks. License to work as an auctioneer could be required in some areas.
