The automation maintenance technician repairs and maintains the computer-controlled systems and robotic devices used within the automated assembly and manufacturing facilities of company to reduce human intervention and maximize efficiency. These duties require knowledge of electronics, mechanics and computers.

Working Conditions:

The position requires full time availability on a shift basis and forms an integral part of the production team. The incumbent will perform standby duties from time to time, which will also require working of overtime as and when required.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the maintenance and optimisation of a number of machines within the company manufacturing complex.

Key Responsibilities:

The Automation Technician will ensure compliant, accurate, and timely completion of corrective, emergency, and preventive maintenance on automation systems and equipment

Execute predictive and preventive maintenance on automation equipment and systems including but not limited to PLC/DCS control systems hardware and software, HMI, operating systems, servers, and instrumentation

Performs routine diagnostic checks on automated systems, monitor automated systems, isolate problems and perform repairs

Ensures machines operate at optimal efficiencies
Troubleshoot deviations and determine if the problem is mechanical, electrical or from the computer systems controlling the process. Once the issue has been diagnosed, the technician is required to repair or replace any necessary components

Respond to and repair emergency automation issues

Training and teaching others – ensure technicians and assistants understand and adhere to critical engineering compliance measures

Ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety Act as well as the Explosives Act and Regulations

Ensure compliance with maintenance and engineering standards

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Qualified electrician, millwright or automation technician

Minimum of 3-5 years related work experience in with automated equipment dealing with programmable controllers, motor to motor controls, electrical and mechanical troubleshooting and predictive and preventative maintenance on automated selection systems

Formal certificate in automation technology or mechatronics is preferable

Working knowledge of the integrated systems of computer science with mechanics, electronics and process controls

Working knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics, programmable logic controllers, electrical circuits, electrical machinery and human-machine interfaces

Good math and analytic skills are essential to understand automated systems and isolate problems

The incumbent is expected to become proficient with various instruments and hand tools that are used in the assembly and testing of explosives products

Excellent technical aptitude and skills, computer literacy, experience with control hardware, programmable controllers and material handling systems

Ability to read, analyse and apply complex technical data

Ability to effectively interact and communicate with internal and external service providers

Ability to organise and prioritise tasks and consistently meet deadlines and schedules

Ability to continually upgrade skills and remain current with industry trends

Willingness to work varied schedules to meet business and operational needs

Able to respond positively to changing requirements and pressures

Physically fit and energetic with sober habits
