Our client and the DST National Centre for Nanostructured Materials is a platform for the implementation of the South African National Nanotechnology Strategy. They undertake innovative research on nanostructured materials and have an extensive research network with other local and international research organisations. They have a strong focus on human capital development, make a significant contribution to the creation and dissemination of new scientific knowledge, and collaborate closely with industry to help ensure successful outcomes and impact of the group’s research and development activities. The Centre has extensive facilities including a comprehensive characterisation facility and gas testing station. They are involved in research investigating the synthesis and properties of advanced nanomaterials such as metal-oxides for applications in gas sensors and solar harvesting. The focus in the next three years is on gas sensors. There currently exists a position for a Chief/Principal Scientist in the Advanced Materials for Device Applications Project.

Requirements:
A minimum of a Doctoral degree or equivalent in fields of Physics or Chemistry or Biochemistry or Electronics Engineering.
A size-able number of outputs through journal publications, chapters in books etc.
Proof of having attracted some good level funding to cover his/her research costs and that of a small group of scientists.
Proof of having supervised Masters Students and proof of graduation of the same.
A minimum of 7 to 10 year’s extensive experience in nano-scale science, nano-sensors and active nano-devices.
An extensive publication record with at least two international patents in sensing and/or devices.
Proof of leadership skills and experience of managing a group of researchers.
Excellent communication and presentation skills in order to interact with industry.
Problem-solving, solution-seeking orientation.
A goal-oriented approach.
Ability to work independently, as well as in teams.
Negotiation skills.
Attention to detail.
Must be computer literate and able to use the company’s various systems (procurement, etc.).

Responsibilities:
Contribute to the leadership of the Advanced Materials group.
Write project proposals to attract top-level funding for group activities.
Design sensor devices for mines and biomedical applications.
Supervise post-doctoral researchers, masters and doctoral students.
Publish widely within the field.
