Our client and the DST National Centre for Nanostructured Materials is a platform for the implementation of the South African National Nanotechnology Strategy. They undertake innovative research on nanostructured materials and have an extensive research network with other local and international research organisations. They have a strong focus on human capital development, make a significant contribution to the creation and dissemination of new scientific knowledge, and collaborate closely with industry to help ensure successful outcomes and impact of the group’s research and development activities. A fully equipped characterisation facility, as well as processing equipment, is available, including an extruder, mixer, injection moulder, 5 layer film blower and an upscaling facility for clay and associated materials. The position of a Chief or Principal Researcher is available to assist in the drive to develop polymer Nanocomposites materials for industrial applications.

Requirements:
A doctoral degree in polymer chemistry.
At least 7-10 years’ experience in polymer Nanocomposites synthesis and characterization.
A substantial list of publications in international polymer journals.
Experience of familiarity with nanoclays and other nanoparticle inclusion in polymers.
Student supervision or mentorship advantageous.
Experience in working with polymer related biomaterials and/or sensors.
Experience of the industrialization of polymer Nanocomposites and/or polymer blends.
Evidence of the development of innovative materials.
Solid proof of managing at least one industrial project.
Project management experience.
Evidence of team management.
Excellent communication and presentation skills in order to interact with industry.
Problem-solving, solution-seeking orientation.
A goal-oriented approach.
Ability to work independently, as well as in teams.
Negotiation skills.
Attention to detail.
Must be computer literate and be able to use the organisation’s various systems (procurement, etc.).

Responsibilities:
Play a leading role in the development of innovative materials for application in various industrial areas, predominantly packaging materials, sensing devices as well as automotive applications.
Interact with industry in order to facilitate the flow of novel products to industry, including participation in industrial forums in order to actively seek out industry opportunities.
Supervise senior researchers, postdoctoral researchers, students and interns.
Write project proposals in order to attract external funding.
