Our company is excited by the prospect of expanding the Customs Operations team through the recruitment of a seasoned leader to take up the role of Customs Operations Manager. Reporting to the National Customs Manager for South Africa and based in Johannesburg, the successful candidate will oversee day to day operations, manage the team, optimize processes and lead the team through change. The focus is the alignment with global strategy, systems and process implementations. He/she will work closely with a range of stakeholders to fulfil customer expectations and drive a cost effective and efficient operation.
• Ensuring compliance and effectively manage the Entries department in line with Customs Law to minimize risk
• Ensuring internal KPI’s are agreed and aligned with the Seafreight and Airfreight business units
• Adhering to KPI’s through the framing of entries, preparation of relevant documents and streamlining of procedures
• Ensuring SOP’s for all relevant operational departments are maintained and followed including those related to provisional payments
• Addressing issues in relation to detained shipments to facilitate the release of cargo to minimize exposure
• Monitoring the internal workflow management system to distribute workload efficiently in the team
• Establishing and maintaining relationships with key clients and ensuring their needs are met
• Ensuring that all employees are adequately trained to perform current and future functions, aligned with company's guidelines and other
divisional frameworks.
• Driving the performance of the team to ensure compliance with work instructions and overall objectives
• Ensuring the effective implementation of all QSHE guidelines and continuous improvement efforts
• Facilitating skills development and cross-skilling in the team by utilizing customs specialists and other training opportunities
• Coordinating closely with specialists to apply correct tariff headings for the purposes of customs declarations
• Ensuring rebate entries are submitted correctly
• Address and resolve client queries
• Maintaining accurate statistics of the department’s productivity, profit, customers, number of entries and lines.
• Effectively leading the department in line with all HR frameworks and guidelines.

Your skills and experience
• A B-Degree in Logistics or equivalent qualification will be a distinct advantage
• Proven leadership ability and at least 5 years’ experience in a role in Freight Forwarding managing a large team
• Advanced Excel Skills
• Thorough understanding of the Customs environment and Import Operations
• Fluent in English and ability to communicate verbally and in writing
• Proven experience with various IT systems in the Freight environment
• Excellent ability to provide customer service
• Demonstrated experience in leading process improvement initiatives
