Description

This position requires a highly competent, highly motivated and driven individual who is able to work well on their own and within the team, with limited supervision, and who actively seeks ways of adding value to the business in their role as Senior DBA.

The DBA Team is relatively small and there are a lot of opportunities for an individual to add significant value to both the team and the company by contributing ideas, identifying opportunities, suggesting solutions and sharing expert knowledge within the team and with our clients. As a member of the team you will help define the procedures and processes of the team to ensure smooth day-to-day activity

The SQL DBAs are responsible for the support of the internal Microsoft SQL server databases and related database infrastructure. Supported databases run primarily on MS SQL Server 2008 and 2012 on the Windows 2008 and 2012 operating systems. Primary responsibilities include: database software installation and upgrades, database requirements analysis and design, database creation, database monitoring and tuning, database backup and recovery, and maintenance of existing database support scripts and related processes

Main responsibilities

Technology:

*Database Software Installation and Upgrades
*Identify server hardware, software and configurations necessary for running MS SQL 2008, and 2012 in an optimal fashion.
*Utilise and refine existing process descriptions for database software installation and configuration
*Develop new processes, leveraging new technology, to streamline the process of building new database servers
*Database Requirements Analysis and Design
*Enforcement of database standards
*Work with application development teams to design, and review designs for new databases, or changes to existing databases
*Assess and identify database server resource requirements based on new application and customer requirements
*Periodically assess and refine database standards based on new technologies and business direction
*Database Monitoring and Tuning
*Develop and improve procedures for automated monitoring of database availability and performance
*Review performance stats and recommend changes for tuning database, server, storage configurations and applications
*Database Backup and Recovery
*Participate in backup audits, ensuring all databases and associated logs are being backed-up
*Periodically conduct test database restores to validate backup integrity and refresh skills
*Gather requirements and make recommendations for application backup and recovery
*Implement new backup and recovery processes that leverages new techniques and technology
*Database Problem Research and Resolution
*Assume ownership of database related problems; pursuing short and long-term problem resolution and root cause analysis
*Work with vendors and internal support representatives to gather information, determine and implement resolutions
*Coordinate interaction with vendors in critical database problem situations
*Database Support
*Participate in a 24X7 standby

Other

*Learn and stay up-to-date on the features and functionality available in MS SQL Server 2008 & 2012
*Investigate new functionality of MS SQL Server 2012 and implement into environment
*Use established support processes (e.g., change and problem management) and tools (e.g., monitoring).
*Collaborate and work with development areas
*Evaluate current technology and recommend tools/processes for improving availability, reliability, and stability and work efficiencies (within team or across dept.)
*Generate innovative approaches and solutions to complex problems
*Adapt to integrating new and existing solutions across platforms

Qualifications

*Bachelor's Degree in Computer related field


Skills/Competencies and experience

*Minimum of 5 years’ experience with MS SQL Server 2008, clustered SQL Servers, replication, log shipping, database mirroring and replication
*Good working knowledge of MS SQL Server 2012
*T-SQL scripting experience writing complex stored procedures
*Experience using SQL profiler
*Data modelling experience as well as SQL performance and tuning
*Broad knowledge of technology platforms, products and services
*Experience in a technical support organization
*Excellent communication skills
*Cross-functional team collaboration experience
*Experience working with development teams
*Strong relationship building skills across technical and business teams
*Strong analytical and trouble shooting skills
