Deputy Director - Johannesburg
Our activities include litigation, research and advocacy to advance and promote the rule of law. We focus on protecting everyone’s right of access to health care services, basic education and sufficient food, as guaranteed by the Constitution.
SECTION27 seeks a dynamic and driven candidate for the position of Deputy Director. The successful candidate will work closely with the Executive Director and members of the Executive Committee of SECTION27. S/he will be responsible for management and oversight of SECTION27’s internal and administrative functions, reporting to the Executive Director. S/he will be expected to represent the organisation with donors, partner organisations and other stakeholders.
? Work with the Executive Director and the Head of Human Resources and Administration in creating an organisational culture conducive to achieving SECTION27’s vision and objectives.
? Together with the Board and the Executive Director, define the organisation’s future direction, strategic goals and policies.
? Be accountable for implementing these strategies and ensuring that goals are met both quantitatively and qualitatively through work-plan budgeting and performance review processes.
? Ensure that the management and operations of SECTION27 adhere to the organisation’s principles, protocols and core values.
? Work with the Executive Director in leading, overseeing and monitoring projects and associated budgets in coordination with the Head of Finance and Heads of programmes.
? Work with heads of programmes to develop objective performance measurements across all programmes to ensure consistent, high-quality evaluation and goal-setting.
? Ensure, together with the Head of Finance and the external auditor, the timely finalisation of SECTION27’s annual audits and reporting.
? Manage and provide mentorship to staff directly managed by him/her.
? Ensure that SECTION27’s corporate identity, mission and name are used in a representative and consistent manner across all activities of the organisation.
? Build and nurture relationships with new and existing donors.
? Develop fundraising initiatives together with the fundraising committee.
? Perform directorial duties in the absence of the Executive Director.
Qualifications, knowledge and skills
? University degree or recognition of previous experience in a related field.
? At least three years of senior management experience and/or a proven record of effective leadership and performance in a supervisory role.
? Extensive experience and knowledge of human rights advocacy in South Africa.
? Knowledge and experience of legal and constitutional advocacy and social justice.
? The ability to inspire and lead staff to attain the performance levels required to meet the objectives and overall operational and strategic plans of the organisation.
? Basic skills in Public Relations, Communication and Fundraising and strong networking capacity in a variety of spheres.
? A working style that is proactive, energetic, innovative and flexible.
? Demonstrable integrity, idealism and passion, with a self-motivated and positive attitude.
? Excellent written and spoken English is required.
? Proficiency in (or working towards learning) one or more indigenous South African languages is highly recommended.
