ELECTRICAL DESIGNER III – West Rand, JHB
Manufacturer of commercial appliances, looking for an Electrical Designer III (Senior Level Electrical Designer / Engineer) to design electronic controls in their equipment.

Main Purpose
To plan, conduct & direct: Engineering R&D Projects or manufacturing engineering assignments - requiring the expert application of advanced engineering & knowledge of other disciplines.
A self-starter & able to work on his own. Reports to: Electrical R&D Manager

Main Responsibilities
• Assess project requirements & develop a project specification with colleagues, incl. those from other engineering disciplines.
• Work closely within a mixed-discipline team to achieve the time, budget & technical objectives (basic understanding of other related disciplines).
• Document all work in relevant technical environment, incl. advanced algorithms & design calculations, plans & estimates, design performance characteristics & summarized project cost breakdown.
• Fully understands the impact of regulatory requirements on designs.
• Develop procedures for testing modules/components/products & evaluate, modify/enhance & re-test products.
• Work within company’s R&D applicable development methodologies and/or standard operating procedures.
• Standardise all designs, using standard components; particular consideration given to inventory management. Use appropriate components to ensure product excellence (reliability, high levels of functionality, value, ease of manufacture & maintainability)
• Solve problems in core discipline. Relies on assistance from senior personnel only in the most challenging situations.
• As a specialist, will act as Advisor / Coach to mentor junior members of the team.
• Designs complex modules/components/products that are reliable, cost effective & that will perform consistently in specified operating environments within agreed timelines & budgets.
• Responsible for projects requiring complex judgement using high level engineering principles & techniques.

Qualifications, skills & experience:
• Degree or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering
• Min 5 years work experience in a similar environment
• Strong communication skills; Able to exchange complex information with all levels in the organisation - R&D Team/ R&D Management/ Suppliers & Customers/ Production
• Advanced knowledge of design tools - preferably Altium Designer and/or Applicable Embedded Development Environment.
• In depth understanding of manufacturing/ assembly processes, for high volume items
• Ability to multi-task & adapt to changes quickly
