JOB DESCRIPTION / RESPONSIBILITIES

MISSION FOR THE ROLE:
The Environmental, in accordance with overall corporate objectives & plans, directs all plant activities in the areas of Sustainability (i.e. overall environmental compliance).
Develops, implements, and administers programs designed to assure the highest standards attainable to protect the environment and comply with all applicable regulations/legislation.
Is responsible for sustainability reporting (i.e. environmental) in line with compliance requirements mandated by national, provincial & local regulations as well as internal standards.
Assists in the development of operating procedures and strategies that assure the environmental integrity of the facility.
As a primary liaison with regulatory agencies, the Environmental Specialist is responsible for licences/permits, investigating inquiries and environmental community relations.

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Environmental Management
Direct all environmental programs related to the Plant & Quarries.
Assure activities are in compliance with applicable environmental regulations.
Identifies & manages day-to-day environmental operational issues and recommends course of action, i.e. manage & monitor the pollution concerns relating to air, water and land in order to identify proactive measures/actions needed to minimise/avoid impacts &/or liabilities.
Serve as a liaison with National, Provincial and Local Regulators.
Act as a lead in coordinating corrective actions required to address environmental problems.
Develop carbon-budgets for the Company.
Evaluate alternative fuels and raw materials for environmental compliance, special licence needs, risks, etc.
Coordinate activities of technical staff members as they apply to environmental matters (Process, Production, Quarry, etc.).
Train employees on site specific environmental practices.
Roll-out environmental awareness raising initiatives (i.e. World Environment Day, Water Week, Arbour Week, etc)
Develop & implement EMS ISO 14001 in line with ISO & Group Standards.
Manage consultant activities - retain and evaluate service providers of outside expertise as necessary.
Review new construction and equipment from environmental compliance point-of-view.
Complete/Develop all required daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly & annually reports on air emissions, discharges/pollution, waste management, water consumption, biodiversity management/quarry rehabilitation activities, etc., and maintain records of same.
Coordinate certification, recertification, and compliance testing of stack emissions and emissions monitoring equipment.
Recommend pollution control and/or monitoring equipment and supervise installation, certification, calibration, maintenance, etc., of same.
Serve as part of quarry (mine) permitting team and assists in other quarry-related activities.
Direct all activities related to storage tanks, hazardous waste, recycling, and waste minimization.
Represent the plant at regulatory hearings, legal actions and legislative meetings.
Complete applications or renewal of permit/licences and maintain files, as required.
Follow trends in environmental regulations, keeping plant current and ready for implications from changes.
Handle community complaints and inquiries on environmental matters (dust, odour, noise, etc.).
Assist other plants and quarries from time to time with environmental management issues, as required.
Represent the Company at the Association of Material Producers, i.e. attend the SD Meetings, act on & implement sustainability actions from the meetings &/or government authorities.

QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree or higher in physical or biological science.
Management Development Programme (Essential/Minimum).
Knowledge and experience preferably in the mining industry.
Minimum of 5 years’ experience in an Environmental Specialist role capacity.

Culturally aware and sensitive
Working knowledge of hazardous materials including hazardous wastes, asbestos, and other hazardous pollutants.
Ability to understand and apply government regulations related to hazardous materials and wastes.
Experience in inspecting for hazardous materials and understanding processes which can produce hazardous wastes and hazardous air pollutants.
