The Centre for Proteomic and Genomic Research (CPGR) is a non-profit organisation providing state-of-the-art ‘omics’ services to the life science and biotech communities in South Africa. Based in Cape Town, we combine state-of-the-art, information-rich genomic and proteomic technologies with bio-computational pipelines to create fit-for-purpose offerings for customers in academia and industry
We seek to appoint a dynamic and energetic individual to assume responsibility as Financial Accountant, reporting to the Financial Manager.
Main purpose of the role
To maintain the integrity of the financial accounting function within CPGR in accordance with sound accounting practices, company policy and legislative requirements.
Minimum Requirements
• BComm Accounting/Financial Degree
• 3 – 5 years’ experience
• Navision experience would be advantageous
• Be highly computer literate (Excel)
• A strong financial and commercial aptitude
• Ability to use own initiative and work with minimum supervision
• Able to work flexible working hours (overtime when/if needed)
• Able to work under pressure in order to meet strict deadlines
• Have strong relationship building skills
• Be conscientious and tenacious
• An ability to adapt to change quickly and effectively
• Knowledge of relevant legislation (VAT, income tax, Companies Act)
• Knowledge of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS)

• Oversee, implement and maintain financial accounting / administration and internal control processes in line with the policies and procedures in force from time-to-time
Duties and Responsibilities
• Establish and manage a review process to manage the relevant risk (completeness, accuracy, validity, cut-off and authorisation) within the area of speciality
• Support the financial manager in ad hoc-projects from time-to-time
• Preparing the month-end accounts up to Management Accounts
• Investigating unexpected variances in the profit & loss account
• Overall reconciliation of the accounts to ensure that all costs and revenues have been accounted for
• Preparing & reviewing monthly reconciliations for balance sheet accounts
• Maintaining the company’s fixed asset register (duties include calculating and posting depreciation and tracking the annual capex spend versus budget)
• Responsibility for stock month end procedures, including collation of count adjustments, scrappings, adjustments and similar and ensuring accurate financial reporting thereof
• Managing relevant areas of the annual budget and wider participation in the general process
• Preparation of lead schedules at financial year end and responsibility for relevant areas of the annual audit
