Job Summary
Execute daily planning as received from Freight Planners, monitor progress of vehicles on route and execute administrative tasks associated with responsibilities.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities
Issue drivers with their loading instructions as received from the planners. Ensure drivers are aware of the location of the loading points & the drivers follow the correct loading sequence to ensure the effective use of the fleet of vehicles.

Monitor the loading progress of the drivers assigned to the individual controller and ensure the correct number of pallets and product is loaded in the correct way at the correct temperature at the right loading point. The controller must further ensure that the load weight does not exceed the permissible weight limits of the combination, that the load is properly secured to decrease the risk of damage to the load and that the vehicle is sealed in the right manner with the seal numbers recorded on the paperwork.

Monitor the on-route progress of the vehicles assigned to the freight controller and coordinate any non-conformance to the standard operating procedures. (including breakdowns, overloads, mud recoveries, temperature non-conformances, speeding, routes used etc) The freight controller must further manage the drivers sleeping points as well as approval for overnight loads and any special requests from the driver pertaining to personal affairs. It is also the responsibility of the Freight Controller to inform the Freight Planners of any deviation from instructions as issued by the Freight Planners.

Contact the offloading point before arrival of the vehicle to inform the client of the estimated arrival time of the vehicle as well as to obtain if there are any special instructions from the client pertaining to the receiving of the load. Upon completion of the offloading procedure the freight controller must verify with the driver that the correct number of pallets and product were offloaded at the correct offloading point at the correct temperature in the right condition. The Freight Controller must further ensure that all paperwork and administrational tasks that relates to the load and or Operations, is completed in the correct manner and all associated documents required are in the possession of the driver.

Debrief the driver upon arrival in the depot on all loads done since departure from the depot and check the correctness of the paperwork of these loads. Once checked, hand the paperwork over to the debtors department for invoicing. Further discuss the drivers on route behaviour with the driver, as well as any personal issues such as leave, off weekends etc.
