General Manager: Operations (Specialised Concrete Products) – East Rand

Job Description:

Our client provides its customers – cement manufacturers, concrete plants, precast manufacturers, and construction companies – with its formulation expertise and knowledge of construction materials. They are looking to employ a General Manager – Operations at their East Rand Branch.

Position Details: Job description:

Position assignment:

To ensure cohesion, efficiency and improvements within budget & BP guidelines of Production, Logistics, Sales Administration & R&D operations within the company.
Responsibilities include the entire East Rand plant as well as the KZN and Cape plants under direct management of a Branch manager.
Member of the EXCO he reports to the Managing Director.

Responsibilities:

Develop the standards of the different departments under management responsibility including the setup of Key Performance Indicators and relevant activity monitoring dashboards.
Contribute to the development of the people in their job and career.
Handle relevant interfaces with other company departments and outside (Head office France, local SAF governing bodies, building owners).
Ensure that all key objectives are set, agreed and followed by all people in operation departments
Responsible of Operations implementing and maintaining the accredited documented systems for ISO 9001, OHSAS 18001 and ISO 14001 for East Rand.

Production:

Ensure that all SAF production facilities meet budget and BP objectives in terms of quality, volume, lead time, cost, BBEEE plan, and safety.
Ensure that QC control is to conform to ISO standards and within the highest Group performance benchmark.
Ensure that new technical developments are explored thoroughly and completed within agreed development plan.
Ensure performance and constant competitiveness of the production activity including use of IT tools.
Define mid-term SAF production development plan in terms of people and equipment

SHE Responsibility:

Responsible for Operations employees and subcontractor’s safety.
Target zero accident and comply with SHE policy of the company,
Involvement in implementing and feeding a continuous improvement process regarding SHE standards.

Stock Management:

Ensure the right level of raw material and finish goods in coordination with finance and sales. Define KPIs and propose corrective and preventive actions to optimize WCR in South African plants.

Logistics and customer service:

Ensure that logistics meet budget and BP objectives in terms of service, lead time, cost, BBEEE plan, and safety.
Ensure performance and constant competitiveness of the logistic activity.
Ensure innovation is part of logistics and customer service development.

Sales Administration:

Ensure the effectiveness of the processes from customer ordering to invoicing taking into account all needed interactions with customers, sales people, production, quality and logistics department.
Structure working processes and define/request supporting tools.
Improve efficiency and service to customers (both internals and externals).
Optimize inter branch transfer.

Purchasing:

Ensure that purchasing meet budget and BP objectives in terms of cost, working capital, quality, lead time, BBEEE plan, and safety.
Ensure performance and constant competitiveness of the purchasing activity through proper purchase marketing and supplier selection.
Ensure innovation is totally integrated into purchasing
Improve BBEEE scoring on Procurement

R&D:
Ensure that R&D meet company strategic objectives, formulation transfer and new product developments.
Ensure that Group new R&D key technologies are appropriated locally and incorporated in new product developments within agreed time to market objectives.
Ensure that R&D developments and Technical Application Laboratory work in synergy.
Capture and support Executive VP innovation proposals.

Performance / Success criteria:

Meeting budget and KPI objectives of production, logistics, Sales admin, purchasing and R&D
Staff meeting their objectives SAF’s image in quality, service and new products is maintained or improved
SHE improvements by developing people maturity in safety (qualitative objectives) and by reaching quantitative target of the company (0 accident).

Improvement of KPI on sustainability developments namely, good environmental practices in Air & water emission reduction and on Energy consumption optimization (efficiency, cost savings, technical upgrade)

Job Qualification & Experience:

Degree in Process/Chemical Engineering, with MAP or MBA advantageous.

Concrete Institute qualifications advantageous

7 to 10 years’ experience in a Management position in a Manufacturing environment with 3 to 5 years’ experience in an Operations Management position.

Over the years our client has grown, both in size and diversity, to become a major supplier of specialised construction products to the building, civil engineering and building maintenance industries, supplying products directly to customers through its branch network as well as through builders’ merchants and hardware stores. They have manufacturing plants in Gauteng and KwaZulu Natal.
