The role is expected to provide expert geotechnical advice on Undercutting and Drawbell construction, planning and operations, thus ensuring long-term stability by the selection of appropriate excavation and design parameters in consideration of the local geological and geotechnical environment.

Geo-Tech Engineer

Limpopo Province

Extensive experience in block cave establishment including undercutting and drawbell construction.

 

Intrinsic qualities:

Experience in block cave establishment including undercutting and drawbell construction.

Managerial/supervisory experience

Technical design and analysis

Technical knowledge of undercutting systems

Analysing and interpretation of geotech data information

Applicable legal knowledge and understanding

Decision making ability in a fast changing environment

 

Qualifications and Experience:

Advanced Certificate in Rock Engineering / GDE / Post graduate Rock Engineering / Geotechnical

Degree/Diploma with a strong mathematical base or Geology/Mining/Geotech Engineering

Chamber of Mines Certificate – Rock Mechanics (Will be advantageous)

Experience in block cave establishment including undercutting and drawbell construction.

Extensive knowledge of massive mining methods and relevant geotech monitoring systems.

10 years’ experience in Geotechnical/Rock Mechanics of which 5 years was on supervisory level.

Experience in Numerical modelling Software, (elastic and inelastic).

Experience in Seismic and Integrated geotechnical monitoring systems

 

Key responsibilities will include:

Identify, develop and introduce best practices regarding mine, undercutting methods, support design and monitoring methods, tools and equipment.

Design and assist in implementing systems, procedures and techniques that will reduce or eliminate

Rockfall hazards.

Apply collaborative and consultative approach to consistently meet business needs.

Assist in creating systems (e.g. Strata control standards) which embed safe mining practices. Training and enabling functional specialists as well as operating personnel to understand rock mass risks and lead indicators.

Lead Geotech team and working with other professionals to deliver high quality reports on time.

Analyze trends of roof falls and accidents/ incidents.

Consistently deliver solutions which contribute to business results.

Enable and support line managers on a day to day as well as crisis situation basis to manage risk

effectively – facilitate problem solutions by applying sound geotechnical principles and ensuring the correct outcome.

Select the most suitable ground support by applying geotechnical assessments to ensure that the desired levels of stability will be maintained throughout the required period of operation.

Establish database of roof conditions, rockfall and accidents/incident investigations. Use this database to identify research projects and serve as basis for improvement.

Deliver quality cost effective solutions on time and within risk parameters.

Execute continuous Audit for systems and compliance to Code of Practice and confirming validity of current practices.
