Our client, a leading Gold Mining Group, is looking for an experienced and qualified Head of Technical Services for their facility outside Westonaria to the west of Johannesburg.

Purpose of the Job:

The Head of Technical Services is responsible for providing the mineral resource base for the mines long-term business plans, creating and leading the comprehensive long, medium and short term geological and mine planning strategies. The incumbent is responsible for the geotechnical, mine planning, VOHE and survey functions for the South Deep Gold Mine.

The incumbent is responsible for overall leadership, strategic and technical direction as well as management processes and systems to ensure that the technical services function is aligned to and supports the overall operational performance objectives. The incumbent is responsible for leading and directing mine plan designs along with associated budgets and ensuring efficient capital allocation. The incumbent, in addition, is responsible for ensuring effective cross functional coordination between geology, mine planning, survey and VOHE to ensure efficient and effective technical services are provided.

The appointee will have:

Diploma / Degree in Mining Engineering, Geology, Mine planning or Rock Engineering.
Mine Manager’s Certificate of Competency (MMC)
Registered PREng with ECSA
Registered member of SAIMM (South African institute of minerals and metallurgy)
15 years’ experience in mining and/or mineral sector with 8 years Management/Leadership experience.

Key areas of focus:

Lead and direct all aspects of geological and exploration programmes as well and conduct project techno-economics evaluation
Provide geological advice in order to support other management and operations functions in line with the organizations’ strategic priorities
Oversee management of mine planning strategies for alignment to business objectives
Oversee underground mine excavation design and monitoring including, but not limited to, mining sequencing for large excavations
Ensure the development of long term strategic planning through the provision of direction on mining layout and the development of surveying systems
Ensure compliance with mining guidelines and other legislation and provide recommendations where policies and procedures need to be amended in order to align with legislation and regulation.
Design and manage underground ventilation requirements to ensure safe underground working conditions
