Laboratory Technician x3

Sci-bono Discovery Centre is seeking technicians in the following fields:
1X Life science, 1X Chemistry and 1X Physics
Job Purpose
Facilitation of laboratory practical sessions for learners, educators and the general public. Ensuring a safe, professional, neat and accessible laboratory environment. Management of all the laboratory equipment, chemicals and apparatus. Raising awareness, understanding and engagement in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) concepts through laboratory experiments. Assisting the science centre team with administration, programme development, and event management and implementation either at Sci-Bono or at remote sites or other venues. Provide training on practical laboratory experiments and best laboratory practices, including training of other science centre team members.

Key Responsibilities:
1.Formulate a laboratory practical schedule for learners, teachers and the general public.
2.Develop laboratory practical’s aligned to the centre activities, including the focus weeks, grade 12 revision sessions, supplementary tuition programmes etc.
3.Place orders and procure laboratory resources.
4.Develop, prepare, teach and facilitate science experiments aligned to the school curriculum.
5.Conduct practical demonstrations for learners, educators and the general public.
6.Ensure safe and proper conduct in the laboratory by educators, science centre staff, learners, etc.
7.Manage the science laboratory by conducting stock takes, labeling of chemicals and equipment, maintaining an inventory list of all resources, ensuring the correct disposal of chemicals, ensure good lab practices, writing comprehensive laboratory reports and managing the laboratory bookings.
8.Network with various institutions and organizations in the laboratory and science sector.
9.Arrange courses and training for staff on laboratory best practices.
10.Advise management on current trends and developments with regards to laboratory resources, management and safety.
11.Assist with administration, management, logistics, venue setup, data capture, maintenance and implementation & development of STEM programmes and activities both on and off site.
12.Implement international laboratory operational health and safety standards

Key Requirements:
• Grade 12 Certificate with Mathematics, Physical Science and/or Life Science
• Tertiary Qualification in Mathematics, Science and/or Education
• Two years experience in communicating STEM
• Proven leaderships and group management skills
• Working with the public and young people
• Experience in working in a science laboratory.
• Be able to work independently and in a team.
• Be able to communicate fluently in more than two South African languages.
• Basic computer literacy skills including MS Word, MS Excel, Internet, and Outlook.
• Time and resource management skills.
• Facilitation, communication and presentation skills.
• Knowledge of science, technology, engineering and mathematics concepts.
• Well developed interpersonal skills.
• Understand constructivist and creative learning approaches and have the ability to apply these in facilitating learning environments.
• Knowledge of the correct use and application of laboratory equipment, instruments and apparatus.
• Knowledge of general laboratory practice.
