Lay Counsellor (HIV Prevention)

JOB SUMMARY
- To provide community and workplace-based combination HIV prevention services to high-risk sexually active adults, including but not limited to the provision of HIV counselling and testing (including finger pricking), symptom screening for sexually transmitted infections and tuberculosis, and individualized risk assessment and risk reduction counselling for high-risk sexually active adults.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Matric (Grade 12) or equivalent
- Counselling Certificate – minimum 10-day Department of Health approved course
- Rapid HIV Testing Certificate (finger-pricking)
- Oral and written proficiency in English
- Ability to effectively communicate in 3 of the following languages: Zulu, Swazi, Tsonga, Sotho, Sepedi, Ndebele
- Ability to travel as and when required
- Ability to work non-traditional hours which may include evenings and weekends
- Clear criminal record
- Residence in Witbank, Middelberg or Lephalale

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL SAND COMPETENCIES
- Good counselling and interpersonal skills
- Experience in HIV, STI and TB prevention (at least 1 year)
- Committed and motivated to preventing HIV, STIs and TB among high risk sexually active adults
- Non-judgmental, trustworthy and empathetic personality

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Valid drivers’ license and own transport will be an added advantage

JOB SPECIFICATION
- Provide HIV prevention education and information in group sessions
- Obtain informed consent for HIV counselling and testing, TB and STI screening
- Provide pre- and post-test HIV counselling
- Perform finger prick of capillary blood for HIV rapid testing
- Provide TB and STI symptom screening
- Provide individualized risk assessments and risk reduction counselling
- Complete daily, weekly and monthly reports as required
- Participate in team meetings and appropriate training workshops
- Detect and address barriers to HIV, STI and TB health-seeking behavior

SALARY PACKAGE
- Market related
