Job Description: Handyman/maintenance person
Summary: Experience in building maintenance, plumbing and carpentry. Ability to carry out basic electrical fault finding. Ability to function independently with minimum supervision. Implementing systems to manage maintenance related tasks (Log books, stock sheets, etc.). Good verbal communications skills. Grade 10 or equivalent qualification. Handyman qualification is beneficial.
• General maintenance of the building and plumbing system.
o Replace globes where required
o Toilets, faucets, fix leaks, etc.
o Request call out of plumber
• Electrical maintenance and fault finding.
o Request call out of electrician
• On request assist with quotes, callouts – log calls for services where required – hand quotes to Facilities Manager for escalation.
o May obtain estimates for supplies, repair parts; order parts as needed.
o Ensuring job cards are issued as per procedure for all work done.
o Specifications on work to be carried out are established and communicated by contractors.
• Shadow services, ensure check sheets are completed for all services and submit to Facilities Manager for record keeping
o Building projects and installations – co-ordinated by Facilities Manager - all Technicians, Electricians and builders to be shadowed while in the building ensuring Health, Safety and Security policies and procedures are followed at all times
• Occupational Health and Safety requirements are adhered to.
o Incidents and potential risks are reported and corrective action taken where necessary.
• Completes daily, weekly and monthly checklists on building equipment maintenance procedures and maintains records of scheduled maintenance procedures
o Generator
o Assist with Temperature monitoring / Thermometer Verifications
o Fridges/Freezers
o UPS
o Air-cons
o Ice maker
• Performs minor and major repair of all buildings and equipment. (Major repairs are performed under the supervision of licensed maintenance workers.)
• Responds to emergency maintenance requests as required.
• Maintains records of scheduled maintenance procedures.
• Performs outside custodial duties such as general landscaping, tree trimming, weeding and
• May exercise some supervision duties.
o Setting up duty rosters and maintenance planning.
• Painting, damp repair work
• Ensure doors, handles, window latches, hinges, closures are in optimal state of repair at all times
• Building projects and installations - shadow builders ensuring that security, health, safety and security policies and procedures are followed at all times
• Ensure that Fire Fighting equipment is in optimal working order at all times –assist with services of equipment, fire extinguishers, alarms, smoke detectors, break glasses, etc.
• Weekly walk through interior and exterior of building and list findings – storage, building cracks, leaks, painting, weather damage, windows, lights, weeds, garden/ground, security concerns, areas for improvement, etc. - report to Facilities Manager / form action plans.
• Maintain power/general tools and equipment inventories
• Ensure maintenance storeroom kept neat, tidy and clean, all equipment and tools neatly stored and locked away when not in use.
