Medical Officer

A Healthcare providing Clinical Care to HIV positive adults, children and adolescents is currently looking for a dynamic and driven Medical Officer based in Johannesburg.

To provide medical care and treatment to patients at selected DoH ARV care and treatment sites and to provide technical advice and support such as training, mentoring, referrals, data management and distribution of materials in support of the 909090 strategy

Education, Training and Experience
• MBBCh degree or equivalent
• Minimum 6months experience in the public Health system practicing HIV medicine
• Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities
• Certification in HIV Management
• Experience working in a donor funded organisation / NGO or project-based environment
• Experience writing donor proposals and protocols
• Organisational and administrative skills together with working knowledge of Microsoft Office
• Ordered and systematic in approach to tasks
• Attention to detail
• Pro-active, able to exercise discretion and independent decision-making
• Able to prioritize own work load and work towards deadlines
• Self-motivated, able to work independently and work as part of a multidisciplinary team
• Able to speak other African languages

Key performance areas
• Examine and treat HIV infected patients.
• Treat opportunistic infections diagnosed.
• Prescribe appropriate treatments.
• Provide ART and prophylaxis according to DoH guidelines.
• Identify and treat patients with ART failures.
• Review difficult cases with DoH staff.
• Facilitate services such as down- and up-referrals.
• Participate in the assessment of clinical skills and needs at selected DoH sites.
• Identify training needs of DoH stakeholders.
• Implement good practice tools i.e. HIV standards, TB Register, Infection Control Manual etc.
• Participate in developing guidelines and other training materials.
• Evaluate training materials within clinical areas.
• Provide training to all levels of health care personnel in areas of HIV care, ethical and legal issues etc.
• Participate in delivering internal and external training programmes.
• Monitor the delivery and quality of training.
• Participate in monitoring the effectiveness of capacity building interventions.
• Participate in ongoing mentorship programmes initiated by other stakeholders.
• Support Quality Improvement Projects initiated in HCHC
• Compile reports on progress and consultations made with district and facilities staff.
• Support District Health Information System (DHIS) data
• Participate in programme audits.
• Compile and submit reports to Programme Managers for submission to donors.
• Participate in compiling documents to showcase work by conducting formal research or by documenting best practice.
• Act as a point of contact for the DoH site, partner organisations, donors and internally where appropriate.
• Communicate with all levels of staff around inputs and outputs.
• Provide feedback to internal and external stakeholders.
• Take ownership and accountability for tasks and demonstrates effective self-management.
• Follow through to ensure that quality and productivity standards of own work are consistently and accurately maintained.
• Maintain a positive attitude and respond openly to feedback.
• Take ownership for driving own career development by participating in ongoing training and development activities such as conferences, workshops etc
