Microbiologist – Graduate Program

Two Microbiologist positions are available at a food microbiology testing laboratory for recently qualified students. The position is based in Strand, Western Cape for a period of 1 year from April 2017 to March 2018.

1. Key Performance Areas

• Ensure that the laboratory carries out its testing in such a way to meet the requirements of ISO 17025:2005
• Ensure that purchased supplies and consumables meet the laboratory’s specification (verified and accepted prior to use)
• Identify nonconforming work and reporting thereof to the Laboratory Manager
• Testing of the accommodation and environmental conditions in the laboratory
• Media preparation and sterilisation of consumables
• Perform microbiological analysis on foodstuff, water and environmental samples
• Ensuring that results are reported accurately, unambiguously and objectively
• Operation, verification and cleaning of laboratory equipment
• Ensure that test methods are carried out accurately and appropriately and in accordance with the Laboratory’s Quality Management System
• Ensuring the quality of test results and reporting any deviations to the Laboratory Manager
• Perform any other reasonable tasks as requested by the Laboratory Supervisor and/or Laboratory Manager from time to time

2. Education & Qualifications

• Tertiary: Degree/Higher Diploma/BTech degree in Food Science, Microbiology or Biotechnology
• Experience: Knowledge and hands on experience in a microbiology environment
• Salary: To be discussed at interview
