Medical Technologist Microbiology

SM Healthcare Placements is inviting applications from suitably qualified individuals for the position of Medical Technologist - Microbiology in Durban, Kwazulu Natal for an exciting role within a Clinical Laboratory Organisation in the medical field.

Primary responsibility is the implementation of the section's objectives, quality control, and communication. Familiarity with concepts, theories, and procedures of a clinical microbiology laboratory including microorganisms, their habitats, and their significance in clinical specimens. Clinical Laboratory Technologists will also perform duties of Charge Technologists when called upon.

The following are the qualifications, experience, knowledge and attributes requirements:

Education, Training and Experience

• B.S. or B.A. degree in Medical Technology or related discipline
• Qualified as Medical Technician in Microbiology
• Registered with HPCSA as a Medical Technician
• Post qualification experience in a diagnostic microbiology laboratory
• Working knowledge and experience in laboratory quality management systems (accreditation
• 2 years working experience
• Knowledge of instrumentation and methodologies.
• Knowledge of Quality Control
• Knowledge of the Meditech system

Key performance areas

• Maintain good client relations in order to promote the image of the company
• Process routine bench work in laboratory in order to ensure efficient processing of specimens
• Responsible for all laboratory procedures related to all activities of the department i.e. Processing of samples on various automated instruments (Vitek, Microscan, MALDI-TOF, Sensititre) antimicrobial susceptibility testing by various methods (disc susceptibility testing, agar dilution, broth dilution) basic biochemical testing, freeze drying
• Responsible for preventive maintenance and scheduling of servicing for all equipment used in the department
• Assist with teaching and training offered by the department
• Perform all duties related to the departments total quality management system and writing standard operational procedures to ensure the unit complies with accreditation standards ISO17043 and ISO15189
• Perform administrative and procurement duties to ensure the smooth functioning of the department
• Compliance with laboratory safety procedures and requirements and maintaining safe working conditions.
