The OHS& E Officer Is responsible for the day to day operation and overall success of all Occupational Health Safety and Environmental issues

• Compiling health, safety and environmental policy
• Implementing a SHE management system, focussing on the legal and client requirements
• Carrying out risk assessments and considering how risks could be reduced
• Outlining safe operational procedures which identify and take account of all relevant hazards
• Carrying out regular site inspections to check policies and procedures are being properly implemented
• Implementing planned job observations
• Conduct internal and external SHE audits
• Undertaking of environmental audits and the compilation of reports
• Ensure vehicle inspections are done by the drivers
• Inter-departmental in-house training with managers and employees about health and safety issues and
risks
• Keeping records of inspections findings and producing reports that suggest improvements
• Keeping records of incidents and accidents and producing statistics for managers
• Keeping up to date with new legislation and maintaining a working knowledge of all Health and Safety
Executive (HSE) legislation and any developments that affect the employer's industry
• Liaise with onsite contractors to ensure their compliance with company safety and adherence to safety
standards, including basic safety induction training
• Co-ordinate Evacuation exercises twice per year to ensure that all staff become familiar with these
procedures
• Making regular site inspection and focussing on the road traffic side as well as the working on heights
• Inspect damages to tolling stations after accident / incidents and file reports
• Manage and control all possible hazards on the freeway operations that could affect the safety and
health of the general public
• Safely handling hazardous substances
• Organizing/attending health and safety meetings
• Liaise with relevant authorities, traffic, emergency services and the DOL
• Making recommendations following accidents / incidents
• Writing reports, bulletins and newsletters
• Ensure equipment is installed and used correctly and safely
• Be available from time to time when agreed for standby duties on the freeways (Emergencies)
• Create awareness among employees and also use it as a training tool. Set risk management standards
based on acceptable self-practices and legal requirements.
• Reduce incidents in the workplace through training and workshops
Qualifications and Education Requirements
• Matric
• Health and safety diploma / or Equivalent
• Incident Investigation certificate
• Risk Assessment certificate
• Working at heights Knowledge and Experience
• Knowledge in traffic management
• Internal SHE facilitator
• Construction Regulation certificate
• Internal SHE Auditors certificate
• OHSAS 18001 Implementation experience
• Valid driver’s licence
• No less than 5 years’ experience in the safety, health and environmental field (Construction, Maintenance or Projects)
• No less than 5 years’ experience with the Workman’s Compensation Act documentation
• No less than 2 years’ experience in the toll industry, freeway traffic safety management
• Sound knowledge regarding the Occupational Health and Safety Act 1993 of 85
• Computer literate (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet, etc.)
