Location: Cederberg area, Western Cape

Description: An olive farm is looking for an Orchard Manager to join their team. Key duties include but is not limited to: The control and monitor of the existing tree standards; improvement on standards based on scientific information and existing information available; calculation of fertilizer requirements; improvement of soil quality; promoting general plant health and replacement of nutrients due to fruit bearing, pruning and plagues; monitoring effective fertilization requirements; monitoring and controlling water distribution; prevention of water-stress; attention to watering during critical stages e.g. flowering; monitoring of water quality; optimization of water usage; management and control of the computerized irrigation system; calculation of seasonal water requirement needs according to trees and orchards yield; data collection for DWS; monitoring of orchard water supply and proactive reporting on shortages; determination of soil health monitoring the use of fertilizers; implementation of ways to improve the soil quality; management and treatment of any in-balances regarding soil nutrients; monitoring and correction of defective drainage; monitoring the flowering and pollination process; improve methods to lead to better fruit sets; determination and management of factors influencing fruit sets; determine the optimal ratio of leaf area to ground area for pruning; ensuring high standards of pruning; aware of the types and times pests appear; timeous treatment of pests with appropriate products; prevention of weeds; research and testing of alternative treatment methods; monitoring of olives and harvesting the right fruit at the appropriate time; determination of return on orchards per cultivar; harvesting process improvement; individual tree health monitoring; tree shape correction in order to promote optimal growth and production; tree grafting to produce cultivar changes; appointment of workers; training of workers; production monitoring and improvement thereof; monitoring of working conditions; management of expenses related to the orchard; assisting with budgets; purchasing of products required; compilation of a database used for improvement and problem identification; monitoring of data to identify any irregularities; data trend analysis; application of technology in order to improve and optimize the harvest volume.

Key Requirements: Qualification in Horticulture, Agriculture or Botany. Previous experience on an olive farm will be beneficial. A driver’s license is essential.

Starting date: As soon as possible.
