A Global provider of lottery, gaming and interactive betting products and services, will establish a local office based in JHB. They will provide datacenter operations and have immediate vacancies:

Basic Function
Operations ensure the continuous and trouble free operation of the On-Line Systems. Execute diagnostic procedures in the event of malfunctions and provide assistance in problem resolution.

Principal Activities and main tasks

• Carry out all tasks on the Computer Operations daily/weekly/monthly checklists without supervision.
• Supervision of the daily operation shifts (shift leader role in normal operation).
• Perform basic tasks related to system administration.
• Respond accordingly during system emergencies, report incidents to senior/supervisor/management as appropriate. Perform recovery activities necessary to restore normal product game operation.
• Monitor Control Room environment to ensure stability and continuity.
• Participates in the assessment, development and automation of operational procedures.
• Perform system housekeeping duties for all systems, including backups and restores where required. Performs recovery activities when necessary to restore operations during an emergency.
• Have a good understanding of facility related equipment, such as HVAC unit, UPS systems, generator, alarms, etc.
• Have a good understanding of all Operating Systems, network and all On-line game/Instant software applications.
• Monitor validity and accuracy of all computer documentation and checklists and initiate the document change control procedure when required.
• Basic Incident, Problem and Change Management following ITIL.
• Investigation of incidents and problems. Log incidents and assist with solving problem over the phone, email, instant messaging, in contact with customer and service suppliers. Generate reports required. Verify validity and clarity of computer reports and other output before releasing it from Computer Operations.
• Checking records, logs and trouble reports.
• Performing preventative maintenance on computers and peripheral equipment.
• Ability for working on 12 h shifts (day/night shift in equivalent work system 24/7/365).
• Participate in training new employees as required.

Minimum knowledge and skills requirements

• Must be able to work on holidays as shift requires (24x365 operation), may work up to 12 hour shift.
• Demonstrate high flexibility and good communication in English.
• Effective technical writing skills.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Eagerness to learn and interested in new technologies.
• Able to navigate through and perform basic commands in one of the systems Unix/Linux/AIX/VMS/DOS.
• Working knowledge of FTP/SFTP utilities.
• Comprehensive knowledge of Office suite and PC operating systems.
• Self-motivated, demonstrates initiative.
• Team-working ability.
• Able to effectively delegate.
• Able to balance priorities amongst all stakeholders.
• Strong trouble-shooting and incident resolution skills.


Additional preferred skills and knowledge

• Technical college or the equivalent by experience with additional training in computer technology.
• Knowledge IBM ESX system architecture and VMware technology.
• Notions of relational databases (DB2, SQL).
• Knowledge to IP Protocol, LAN/WAN topology (frame, DSL, Cellular, X.42, X.25, ATM, Satellite, Radio, PTP, Dial-up).
• Monitoring and troubleshooting tools ( Solarwinds, Whatsupgold, Tivoli).
• Data Center network equipment (firewalls, switches, routers, etc), and network cable specifications.
• Introduction to Retailer POS, call center tools and functions.
• Experience in operations, helpdesk or as Supervisor
• Very good knowledge of all operation tasks.
• Notions of monitoring tools (IBM Tivoli or BMC or SolarWinds).
• Notions of ITIL practices.
• Advanced knowledge of Corporate IT best practices and associated tools related to Incident, Change, Release, Audit, and Problem Management.
• Working knowledge of IBM middleware applications (JBOSS, Websphere, etc).
