We are currently seeking a Technical Principal to join our established bridge teams in Durban. With 15+ years of experience in Civil Engineering with a focus in Bridge Engineering. The candidate must have the following:
• Bachelor's Degree in a Civil Engineering. Post graduate qualification in Structural Engineering is desirable.
• Expert level technical knowledge in Bridge Engineering
• Essential to have experience in highway structures
• Advantageous to have experience in pedestrian bridges and rail structures
• Experienced in analysis of prestressed concrete bridges including the associated secondary and time dependants effects
• Excellent industry awareness
• Superior ability to manage client relationships and expectations
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively within a diverse and multi-disciplinary environment
Duties & responsibilities:
1. Personal Development and Attributes

1.1. Maintain personal professional registration on an ongoing basis.
1.2. Personally maintain a field of technical specialisation recognized by the industry and all
stakeholders.
1.3. Actively embrace and promote the core values of the company personally.
1.4. Act as a role model for direct reportees in respect of living the companies values.
1.5. Contribute to industry wellbeing and success by sitting on an industry related committee on an ongoing
basis..
1.6. Actively participating in the companies internal forums e.g. conferences, team building events, etc.
1.7. Approve Timesheets.

2. Management Responsibilities

2.1. Manages a team of bridge engineers.
2.2. Take full responsibility for the technical aspects of his projects undertaken by the structures division.
2.3. If nominated as the Project Lead, take responsibility for the commercial aspects of the Project under
his control.
2.4. Delegates portions of projects to subordinates – holding them accountable for successful completion.
2.5. Ensure full alignment of all projects under their control to the companies QMS.
2.6. Ensure optimal deployment and productivity of direct reportees and optimal profitability of projects.
2.7. Request supplementary experience / skills / IP where gaps exist in ‘own team’ from other technical teams
necessary to ensure optimal effectiveness and efficiency on all projects.
2.8. Ensure that own and team time sheets are submitted, evaluated and approved timeously.
2.9. Timeously produce any reports / feedback that they may be required by the Divisional Director.

3. Project Management

3.1. Assign work, check and manage work allocated to bridge engineers under his/her control.
3.2. Co-ordinate and take responsibility for all aspects of a medium-sized project or a portion of a larger project.
3.3. Programme and ensure that deadlines are met on the project or portions of the project for which he/she is
responsible.
3.4. Ensure that all designs, reports and drawings produced by him/her and the team are checked and signed
off at the required level.
3.5. Make effective use of support staff where applicable.

4. Documentation, Reporting, Contract Administration and Close Out

4.1. Review concept design.
4.2. Review and Evaluate preliminary designs for acceptance.
4.3. Check that drawings comply with concept design and project requirements.
4.4. Review final design and close out report.
4.5. Check content, accuracy and compliance of drawing.
4.6. Address technical adhoc site engineering queries.
4.7. Check amendments to construction drawings.
4.8. Check content and accuracy of schedule of quantities and project specifications for tender documents.
4.9. Review draft document (Bid spec) and final document for client approval.
4.10. Carry out detailed designs strictly in accordance with the relevant codes and specifications.
4.11. When required, carry out research into technically challenging aspects of the project or consult in-house or
external subject matter experts for advice.
4.12. Delegate aspects of the work to own team. Take responsibility for briefing them properly and checking their
work.
4.13. Where applicable, accurately brief draughts people on drawing requirements and check all drawings
produced for technical correctness and accuracy.
4.14. Produce accurate, concise, technically correct reports as required by the Project. Ensure that own reports
and those produced by own team members are grammatically correct and free of typing/spelling errors before
submitting to the client.
4.15. Produce, project specifications based on the applicable standard specifications. Take responsibility for
ensuring technical correctness and accuracy of all specifications produced by own teams.
4.16. Interface with other engineering disciplines and support functions of N/C engaged on the same project.
4.17. Consult with other project stakeholders e.g. other engineers, architects, landscape architects, environmental
scientist etc. and integrate own work into overall Project Scope.
4.18. Proactively communicate and liaise with all the pertinent stakeholders related to a project-representing the company in a manner which elevates its image and brand in the workplace and industry.
4.19. Where applicable, measure the works and produce accurate bills of quantities in line with the standard and
project specifications. Check bills by produced by own team.

5. Developing Self and Others

5.1. Provide technical guidance and mentorship to the engineers, technologists and technicians working for you.
5.2. Through proper exploration of engineering principles and concepts, effectively brief draughts people and
engineering staff.
5.3. Achieve continued Professional Development through regular attendance at industry seminars and
workshops.
5.4. Take post-graduate courses in line with own and company development requirements. In the case of a
technical expert, work towards a master’s level degree or higher.
5.5. Participate in Industry committees and institutions.
5.6. Network and elevate the companies brand by attending and ‘working’ external functions, calling on
existing and potential clients, contributing meaning to the companies newsletter etc.
5.7. Submit and motivate for an industry award projects with unique facets, strive to publish papers / article
published in an industry publication at least once per annum.
5.8 Register as an accredited mentor with ECSA and ensure candidates in your division are eligible for registration in the minimum prescribed time frame.

6. Business Development Responsibilities

6.1. Identify new business leads and potential new markets.
6.2. Maintain fruitful relationships with existing clients.
6.3. Contacting clients to inform them of competitive offerings, new developments or services offered by the
company.
6.4. Working on stringent targets, adopt a professional and knowledgeable approach to each new service/client.
6.5. Planning and co-ordinating the implementation of business plans and penetration of new markets.
6.6. Proactively drive innovation and technology advancement for the division.
