Our client in the Natural Resources and Environment industry has a vacancy for a Principal Researcher in their Waste Management Development Group who specialises in solid waste management. They conduct basic and applied research and development (R&D) in the fields of integrated waste management, waste governance, municipal waste management, waste service delivery, and waste reuse and recycling. The focus of their research is on understanding the opportunities and constraints provided by general and hazardous waste generation in Southern Africa towards growing a green economy.

The location of the position is negotiable between Pretoria, Stellenbosch and Durban.

Requirements:
• A PhD in natural, environmental sciences or -engineering, with at least seven years’ experience in waste management or related field;
• Experience as a member of research working groups or steering committees or advisory boards or editorial boards will be an added advantage;
• A good understanding of waste management research;
• Ability to perform both fundamental and applied research in multi-disciplined diverse teams;
• Evidence of good peer reviewed publication track record and the ability to lead and conduct waste management related research;
• Demonstrate ability to write successful research proposals and secure R&D funding;
• Proven track record of extensive national network within the research community;
• Ability to interact with a network of scientists and work as a multi-disciplinary team;
• A demonstrated ability of independent/innovative thinking;
• Good interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team;
• Ability to be innovative and work under pressure in a contract R&D environment;
• Computer literacy, MS Office;
• Excellent writing skills.

Responsibilities:
• Perform independent research structured around addressing the policy, economic, social and behavioural aspects of integrated waste management;
• Publish and present research findings in high impact peer-review journals at national and international conferences;
• Formulate R&D questions, problem identification, by evaluating and implementing solutions;
• Undertake collaborative research projects with other national and international research institutes;
• Build research networks;
• Mentor and supervise junior research staff and post-graduate students;
• Obtain a good understanding of the potential application of research outputs for the development of strategic regional & international waste management;
• Contribute and lead in strategic planning within the group and engage in organisation level R&D focus development;
• Write proposals and project definitions and research plans;
• Secure funding for research projects;
• Assist current research staff with broader group projects, including operational and financial management;
• Conduct both quantitative and qualitative research.
