Project Coordinator (1 year fixed-term contract)

Main purpose of the job

To manage and train Professional Nurses and Research Assistants to collect quality data timeously, do appropriate screening, enrolments and clinical procedures (specimen collection) in accordance with Good Clinical Practice.

Location

Primarily based at Red Cross Children Hospital, CAPE TOWN - field work includes overseeing several sites in the Western Cape Metropole (must be willing to travel locally)

Key performance areas

• Train and supervise Professional Nurses and Research Assistants to accurately follow standard operating procedures (SOP's) and study objectives pertaining to the different studies.
• Regular site visits to ensure that staff are performing their delegated duties and provide refresher training and feedback.
• Review Case Report Forms and raise queries by means of weekly feedback reports and meetings.
• Provide mentoring and skills development for clinical and non-clinical staff.
• Write reports on staff performance and complete monthly teaching exercises.
• Ensure timely renewal of Ethics approvals /submissions and ensure all staff are accredited with GCP certificates.
• Review of Protocol as per study changes.
• Review and update SOPs to keep up with current training.
• Regular supervision of screening, enrolment and follow up of patients plus be able to assist wherever necessary.
• Liaise with laboratory staff regarding results, forms, lab stickers and lab stock.
• Attend monthly study meetings
• Liaise with all stakeholders involved to ensure the smooth running of the services on a weekly basis and on a monthly basis for CHCs.
• Obtaining quotations, ordering supplies, validating orders and invoicing, as well as drawing up study budget.
• Daily Quality assurance management plus conduct staff performance reviews quarterly and ensure that development strategies are
implemented as planned.
• Accurate stats and record keeping.
• Development and application of writing and reporting skills in the form of monthly reports, abstracts, presentations, proposals and
manuscripts.

Required minimum education and training

Must be a Professional Nurse registered with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
This could have been achieved by any of the following:
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
Diploma in Nursing
Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)
Favorable additional qualification: Master’s Degree in Public Health.

Required minimum work experience

Minimum 2 years’ experience in Clinical Research. Management position preferable.

Additional education, work experience and personal abilities

• Good Clinical Practice certificate (GCP)
• Ability to understand and present data effectively
• Ability to understand and present scientific literature accurately and critically
• Time management skills
• Ability to draw up budgets or has financial experience in a healthcare or donor funded environment
• Reporting and writing skills in the field of research (reports, presentations, abstracts, manuscripts)
• Professional knowledge in paediatric, maternal and adult clinical medicine.
• Clinical skills in specimen collection (blood drawing, nasopharyngeal aspirates, nasopharyngeal swabs, sputa etc.)
• Good interpersonal, analytical and communication skills
• Experience in management of staff
• Able to travel regularly to the various sites, interprovincially for annual meetings and rarely internationally
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of data
• Attention to detail and meticulous
• Excellent computer literacy – Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Powerpoint), Internet, emails, data capturing packages (e.g. Redcap), fast and accurate typing skills.
