We’re looking for a full-time proof-reader and communications assistant to join our communications company, based near the beach in Blaauwberg, Cape Town.

What we do, generally

• We focus on corporate communication and work with content that is technical and factual.
• Many of our clients are from the financial services, IT and healthcare industries.
• We write and edit quarterly publications, brochures, research articles, press releases, web copy, factsheets and newsletters.
• We also develop and write creative copy for advertising campaigns and scripts for radio ads and speeches.
• We work hard and take our work seriously.
• We get excited when we get it right and we get upset when we get it wrong, because we care about our clients, their readers and each other in the team.
• We make nerdy jokes with each other when we need a break, because we are, well, nerds.
• We go home feeling happy and satisfied because we believe that what we do makes a difference to ordinary people that battle to understand complicated content about money, healthcare, IT, and other specialist subject matter in their everyday lives.

What you will do

• Pay attention to the detail, grammar and punctuation.
• Proof read documents that we write and design.
• Check documents for style issues and consistency.
• Read a lot.
• Help everyone in the team produce error-free work. Yes, error-free. We know that we all make mistakes, but our clients pay us to get it right.
• Ask questions about the content to make sure that you understand it.
• Cope well with the pressure of frequent interruptions and client interactions.
• Enjoy the benefit of working with and learning from a top class and close-knit team and fantastic clients.
• Think.
• Pay attention to the big picture so that you know what is going on, but you will be the one that we rely on to zoom into the detail.

Which means you should only apply if…

• Your attention to detail is exceptional. You LOVE detail to the extent that if something is inconsistent or out of alignment it could just drive you crazy. You are the kind of person who will notice when there is an incorrect apostrophe in a 15-page document.
• You aren’t sure if you want to be a writer, project manager or get involved in design and layout so you want exposure to all aspects of communication.
• You don’t just read stuff – you like to think about it, understand it and fix it.
• You can listen. Actively.
• You can follow detailed instructions if you have to, but you can also think for yourself if there aren’t instructions.
• You can manage your time, even if you have to jump between jobs, and you take responsibility for deadlines.
• You have the confidence to be proactive.
• You take ownership of your work – you feel proud when you get it right and look for ways to improve if it’s off the mark.
• You are sensitive to your team members and think about how what you do affects them.
• You’re the kind of person who sometimes ends up talking about work to your friends because you just love what you do.

What’s in it for you

We may be small, but our clients are big. And we work according to their exceptional standards. So, you get to work with and represent these companies to their readers. We have also built some great relationships with some wonderful people that we are privileged to serve. We offer you the opportunity to be part of the team and deliver content that is used widely across various media channels. And you get to work with a small, close-knit team in an environment free of office politics and rigid schedules.

All you have to do is pull your weight, pay attention to the detail, take accountability for results and contribute equally to the quality work we produce every day.

Please don’t apply if:

1. You want to do creative copywriting.
2. You have no experience working with financial services or other technical content.
3. This will be your first job.
4. This “job” is just a way to earn money.
5. You prefer someone else to take final accountability for your work.
6. You don’t take it personally if you miss a comma.
7. You are looking for freelance work.
