SAFETY ENGINEER

Summary of main responsibilities:
o Maintain and apply knowledge of current policies, regulations, technical standards and industrial processes.
o Inspect facilities, machinery, and safety equipment to identify and correct potential hazards, and to ensure safety regulation compliance.
o Identify foreseeable hazards for asset modifications so that appropriate studies can be completed
o Review safety programs to determine suitability and adequacy.
o Review plans and specifications for purchasing and construction of new machinery or equipment to determine whether all safety requirements have been met.
o Analyse and interpret statistical data related to occupational accidents and illness.
o Interpret safety regulations for others interested in industrial safety such as management, engineers, labour representatives, and safety inspectors.
o Provide technical advice and guidance to the organization on how to address safety and health-related problems and make necessary changes.

o Advise on installing safety devices on machinery, or direct device installation.
o Assist with the writing and revising of safety procedures and codes.
o Review multi-discipline documents to ensure ALARP designs have been adopted
o Conduct risk assessments and risk review
o Represent the safety team at kick-off meetings, progress and design review meetings for project or change proposal designs

Providing system safety guidance to engineering staff
o Promoting safety awareness throughout the design development lifecycle
o Co-ordinating safety effort within assigned project
o Advising on plant and equipment safety related matters
o To act as the safety engineering and verification focal point for modification and design jobs/projects carried out by design and maintenance teams
o Assisting with support to regulatory bodies and agencies
o Produce various safety engineering (and legislative compliance) studies
o Co-ordination of Contractor’s Management
o Carry out other reasonable tasks as defined by the Manager or as required in terms of group policies or statutory procedure

Education / Experience required for the job:
• BSc degree or equivalent in Mechanical, Process or Industrial Engineering highly advantageous
• 5 years’ experience in the Industry in the maintenance field
• Practical experience within the safety environment

Skills:
• Self-motivated and must be able to work on your own
• Must have good interpersonal skills
• Computer literate (MS Excel, Powerpoint, word)
