This Durban based construction company is urgently looking for a Operations manager with relevant experience/knowledge of bituminous products.

Purpose of the Position:
The Incumbent is overall responsible for the planning and control of all matters relating to the operations of the Branch/Region.

Reporting Structure:

The incumbent reports directly to the Branch Manager.

Requirements (Education & Experience):

Essential:
- Road construction experience - or
- Previous experience in operational management in a related environment
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excell; Word & Outlook )

Advantageous:
- Tertiary qualification in Construction/Civil Engineering/Operations
- Previous relevant experience/knowledge of bituminous products – highly advantageous

1. OPERATIONS

•Conducting pre-supply meeting with customers in order to understand the timing, equipment, product and human resource requirements, resolving of payment mechanisms/credit terms etc. prior to commencement/execution of projects/orders.
•The scheduling, planning of the ordering of all resources, including staff, plant, transport, subcontractor and material in accordance with project and customer requirements.
•The timely communication and liaising with all respective managers (branch and regional/head office) and employees through internal pre-supply meetings highlighting the customer requirements.
•The rapid and responsive follow up of all equipment breakdowns in conjunction with the workshop manager and ensuring that the repair thereof is swiftly remedied in the most cost effective manner. Constant communication to customers on progress.
•Daily equipment inspections, with the workshop manager, to ensure that equipment is well maintained and any incident/accidents are rapidly followed up and closed.
•The control and monitoring of the fuel consumption of relevant plant and equipment.
•The control and monitoring of all staff related costs, allowances etc.
•The good housekeeping and maintenance of all equipment ensuring that time is made available in line with an agreed plan with the maintenance workshop for the cleaning of the equipment and booking into the workshop
•Housekeeping on all sites, protection of the environment and proper disposal of any waste generated. Maintenance of any site camps ensuring that the appearance of the fleet and camp conforms to the Company standard and image.
•The follow up of all customer queries, quotes and complaints according to the Quality Management system and industry best practice.
•The conducting of routine site inspections to check for quality, safety, admin, environmental and other related items on sites.
•Continuous monitoring of site stock and usage as well as the timely taking and balancing of month end site inventories, ensuring the adherence to laid down deadlines.
•The consistent and constant management in the Quality control of all dispatched products, ensuring that they conform to SABS, COLTO, or any other special project requirements.

2. SALES

•Increase sales of products and services by:
-assisting with regular visits to contractors and clients,
-offering technical advice
-identifying new business opportunities,
-promoting products to clients and consultants,
-building relationships with emerging contractors.

•Improve Colas image by:
-attending to customer complaints,
-skills and pavement management training,
-participating in Industry organizations like SABITA and SAT

•Provide tendering support by:
-attending site inspections,
-assisting in preparation of tenders and quotes,

3 HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT

The Management of all staff that includes the following:

•The controlling of all hours worked, thereby ensuring maximum production is achieved on the minimum of hours worked and within the policies of the company.
•The control and monitoring of all allowances related to the operations division.
•Maintain accurate leave schedules and ensure that staff take leave and that such is reported to HR within the policy guidelines.
•Maintain staff records of licenses, permits, passports etc. and ensure that renewal of such is planned and done timeously.
•The controlling and maintaining of staff discipline and adhering to the Company’s Policy and Procedures on such matters and issuing where necessary the relevant warnings.

4. ADMINISTRATION

•The daily recording of all revenues and expenses.
•The daily reconciling of the vehicle loading reports.
•Daily recording of equipment utilisation, fuel consumptions, man-hours worked etc. on the prescribed format.
•Preparation of monthly internal plant pool accounts for approval by the branch manager
•Preparation of monthly diesel, toll and vehicle tracking allocations for approval by the branch manager
•Weekly overtime and allowance schedule to be prepared and submitted to HR for approval
•The controlling of expenses according to prepared budgets or project estimates.
•The preparation of pro-forma invoices, having them approved by the clients and notifying the Branch Manager of any potential risks or claims.
•The timely reporting of the production, quality and HSE issues to the relevant Manager.
•Assisting the Branch Manager with preparation of budgets/estimates.
•Routine checking of driver tool boxes as well as equipment specific toolboxes

5. HSE/ QUALITY MANAGEMENT

•Acting within the confines of the Health and Safety Act by promoting awareness of accidents to staff including the avoidance of spillages and contamination of products.
•The upkeep and control of the Quality Management System.
•Training of staff and conducting of tool box talks
•Routine inspection of first aids kits and replenishment of expired items

6. TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT

•Taking personal responsibility for own training and development by staying abreast of new and relevant skills and knowledge (eg courses relevant to the company, changes in legislation)
