Purpose of the Job:

This post is located within the SAFARI-1 Facility Engineering (FE) Section. The section is responsible for the design, development and systems engineering functions within the Reactor Engineering (RE) Group. This post is responsible for managing the activities of the Facility Engineering Section.

Key Performance Areas:

Personnel & Resource Management
- Attend to line management responsibilities for ±8 employees reporting to this position; and
- Perform performance assessments and ensure personnel development and training.
Project Management and Budgeting
- Manage and control an operational and capital budget for the section;
- Assist with new project identification and definition;
- Participate in SAFARI-1 projects either as project leader, project member or in a support role;
- Manage procurement activities for the section that include e.g. procurement oversight, supplier interface, etc.
- Realise ±50 projects that range from R100k – R10, 000k in support of SAFARI-1’s safe and efficient operation.
Perform plant engineering and systems engineering activities in the support of the operational excellence of the SAFARI-1 research reactor;
Assist with ensuring compliance with the nuclear license by constantly being aware of the state of the plant and operating conditions and addressing issues that need attention in this regard;
Develop and maintain all relevant specifications related to design and development of safety related SSCs;
Ensure that all SAFARI-1 SSCs are designed functionally safe and efficient;
Play a key role in establishing a design baseline for the facility and maintain plant configuration;
Preparation and review of project related licensing documentation;
Be the custodian for design codes and standards for mechanical, electrical and instrumentation design in SAFARI-1;
Be the custodian for SAFARI-1’s design and systems engineering functions and related processes; and
Provide engineering support to other SAFARI-1 groups as required. Medically fit to register as Radiation and Chemical worker.

Person Profile:

Knowledge of System Engineering.
Knowledge of Project Management.
Knowledge of Reactor Engineering principles.
Knowledge of Licensing and statutory requirements.
Knowledge of International Collaboration.

Qualifications and Experience:

Education
At least a B. Eng qualification (Electronics or Instrumentation is preferred but not prescribed).
A post graduate qualification in Nuclear Engineering will be an advantage.

Experience

At least 5 years’ relevant experience.
Experience in the management of an engineering team in a nuclear environment is an advantage.
Project management track record is required.
