Location: Pietermaritzburg, KZN

Description: A company involved in sustainable agriculture requires a Seed Analyst to join their team. The successful candidate will be responsible for advanced level skilled work in seed testing and analysis performing a full range of laboratory tests and procedures at the full performance level in testing samples of seeds and other materials to determine the germination ability, purity and content of a sample and compliance with established standards. Other responsibilities includes: setting up of laboratory equipment for sample examinations; assembly of working samples of specific dimensions before testing; preparation of substrata and chemicals used in testing; performing various tests and procedures including cold test, use of Tetrazolium to determine viability, phenol test and fluorescent test; conduct purity and germination analyses in accordance with prescribed rules for seed testing and ISTA rules and regulations; determine content of sample by standard quantitative and qualitative analysis, including percentage of weight of pure seed, crop seed, inert matter and weed seed; calculate percentages for purity analyses and germination tests; calculate the number of noxious weeds per sample; prepare purity and germination reports; evaluate results of the analysis to determine if standards are met; make recommendations to supervisor if further action is warranted; prepare and submit test reports with recommendations; maintain records of results and recommendations; maintain a clean and sanitary work area.

Key Requirements: BSc Biology or Agricultural sciences. Certification as Seed Analyst. Experience with testing and analysis in a laboratory setting.

Additional Requirements: Strong analytical, critical thinking and interpersonal skills; proficiency in word processing, database and spreadsheet software; understanding of seed classification and botany; familiarity with microscopes and other lab equipment Knowledge of seed laboratory procedures; of quantitative and qualitative sample analysis; ISTA, rules and regulations and the Plant Improvement Act; operate microscopes and other testing equipment. Ability to supervise and train others.

Remuneration: Market related.
