Description: A consulting and analytical services unit has a vacancy for an experienced Senior Analytical Chemist to supervise the Organic Environmental Laboratory. The laboratory consists of a small dynamic team that focuses on the measurement of trace level organic pollutants in environmental samples including air, water and soil. Key responsibilities will include: taking technical responsibility for laboratory results, interpreting data scientifically and use specialist knowledge to ensure correct information is provided to clients and stakeholders, meeting laboratory requirements in terms of quality and productivity, conducting analyses using GC and GC-MS instrumentation, maintaining GC and GC-MS instrumentation, developing new methods and improve existing methods, training and mentoring junior staff, validating standard analytical methods to prove fitness- for- purpose, improving accuracy, sensitivity, productivity, effectiveness, efficiency and detection limits of routine analytical methods and its instruments and keeping abreast with technical developments and pro-actively refresh skills in analytical chemistry required in the laboratory.
Key Requirements: A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or analytical chemistry; five years’ working experience in a similar environment with at least two years’ in a senior supervisory capacity and experience in working in an ISO 17025-accredited laboratory as a technical signatory are essential. Knowledge of organic and analytical chemistry for trace level analysis; a sound theoretical and practical understanding of LC-MS/MS and GC-MS instrumentation and the ability to troubleshoot and pro-actively solve problems are required.
Additional Requirements: Computer literacy and competency in MS Office, Open Office suite; good written and oral communication skills; attention to detail and the ability to work accurately and well under pressure in a deadline driven environment and good interpersonal skills and the ability to work well in a team or independently will be advantageous.
