Senior Data Base Administrator
Location: Woodstock, Cape Town
 
Purpose of the Role:
To provide specialist input to frame and maintain the required architecture/systems and the execution of data base administration functions. Is responsible for the performance, integrity and security of a database.
 
Requirements:
  • Bachelor degree in IT/IS with minimum 8 years work experience as a Oracle Database Administrator and 3 years on Sybase database
  • Certification in Oracle is a must for this job
  • Must have expertise in Sybase ASE 12.5 and Oracle 10.g
  • Should have knowledge of SQL, SCO – UNIX (Latest Version)
  • MSSQL Server Database Administration is an added advantage
  • Extensive knowledge on Sun Solaris/AIX/Unix
  • Background in Financial Services Industry is preferred.
 
Responsibilities:
  1. Installation, configuration, and upgrade of all databases including but not limited to
    • Oracle 10g /11g
    • Sybase 12.5 / 15
    • Microsoft Sql Server
    • Firebird
    • Pervasive
    • Progress
  2. Ability to conduct preventative maintenance and backup and recovery of databases
  3. Running Backups and verifying logs.
  4. Sound Knowledge of Oracle and OS (Operating System) VMs (Virtual Machines).
  5. Continuous monitoring and trouble shooting of issue related database and performance tuning.
  6. Monitoring and managing database replication between production and DR environments
  7. Suggest and implement high availability and redundancy strategies.
  8. Monitoring and maintenance of database environment.
  9. Develop and deploy monitoring and alert scripts for databases.
  10. Implement regular maintenance Plans.
  11. Responsible for quality control and auditing of databases to ensure accurate and appropriate use of data.
  12. Testing of new patches released and fixes
  13. Database security maintenance including user creations, groups, roles maintenance.
  14. Tracking of Logs and Alerts from database
  15. Detailed impact analysis performance
  16. Map system architecture and evaluate the requirements of new applications and systems and impact on the database
  17. Restoring data on the test environment to make sure that there is no corruption on the backup.
  18. Mapping out the conceptual design for a planned database in outline;
  19. Considering both back-end organisation of data and front-end accessibility for end-users;
  20. Refining the logical design so that it can be translated into a specific data model;
  21. Further refining the physical design to meet system storage requirements;
  22. Installing and testing new versions of the DBMS(Database Management Systems);
  23. Maintaining data standards, including adherence to the Data Protection Act;
  24. Writing database documentation, including data standards, procedures and definitions for the data dictionary (metadata);
  25. Maintenance of error logs and Knowledge Base.
  26. Capacity planning; Working closely with IT project managers, database programmers and developers.
