Our client in the Materials Science and Manufacturing environment has a vacancy for a Senior Engineer in Guided Wave Ultrasound in their Sensor Science and Technology group. SST focuses on R&D in ultrasonic and electro optic technologies and applications. Their projects are conducted across the innovation chain in order to develop ultimate solutions into the market and are often conducted in collaboration with industrial clients, both local and international. This position is based in Pretoria.

Qualification, skills and experience required for this position are:
• The minimum requirement is a PhD in engineering, physics or applied mathematics with at least five years of research experience.
• Demonstrated ability to formulate and implement finite elements.
• Knowledge and experience in some of the following: code development in Matlab, structural dynamics or vibrations, acoustics or ultrasonics, smart materials and signal processing.
• A proven ability to conduct independent research and to supervise students.
• A track record of conference and journal publications.
• Ability to work under own initiative.

Responsibilities
An excellent researcher is required to work in a multi-disciplinary environment supporting research; development and industrialisation work on guided wave ultrasound systems for monitoring rail track. Due to the dispersive and multimodal nature of guided waves extensive use of numerical modelling is made during the development of such systems.
• Continued development and extension of numerical techniques and software codes for the analysis of guided wave ultrasound propagation, transduction and scattering. These codes employ semi-analytical finite elements combined with conventional finite elements to represent infinite elastic waveguides, arbitrary defect geometries and piezoelectric transducers.
• Identifying and implementing future improvements and publication of research results in journals and presentation at international conferences.
• Application of numerical analysis in the design of piezoelectric transducers for guided wave ultrasound.
• Analysis of scattering of guided wave modes from defects in rails.
• Support of experimental work and validation of numerical results.
• Provide strategic inputs to the group and contribute towards funding proposals.
• Co-supervision of master and doctoral degrees.

Criminal, qualification and employment history checks are a pre-requisite for this position.
