Our client in The Materials Science and Manufacturing area has a vacancy for a Senior Researcher Metallurgical Engineer to join their team in Pretoria. They focus on the development of technologies for producing and processing titanium and aluminium alloys for application in industry sectors, such as aerospace, automotive and medical, and also does some work on selected composites containing these metals.

Novel processes have been developed by them to beneficiate titanium-bearing minerals by producing titanium metal powder. Having this powder product, the Powder Metallurgy Technologies research group develops powder consolidation and alloying processes needed to produce near-net and net-shape components for adding further value to the titanium metal along its value chain. The successful candidate will conduct research and development in the field of powder metallurgy. The position is based in Pretoria.

The successful candidate will have a passion for research and development, problem solving abilities, be a lateral and innovative thinker and have a keen interest in implementing technologies. You will be able to communicate and facilitate professional interactions within the group and with fellow researchers in the organisation, at universities and other research and development institutions. A solid understanding of the structure and properties of metals and alloys is essential. This position requires an individual who is able to work independently, as well as in a team environment

Qualifications, skills and experience:
A PhD in engineering or Master’s degree in metallurgical engineering (Physical Metallurgy) or materials engineering. Mechanical engineering with relevant materials expertise and experience may be considered.
The candidate should be able to demonstrate insight into the structure, properties and processing of light metals and / or powder metallurgy.
Relevant research experience.
Knowledge and experience of materials characterisation methods.
Experience or expertise in metallic materials manufacturing methods.
Experience in powder metallurgy of light metals.
Materials selection, design and analysis skills.
Experience in standard and advanced methods of materials testing / analysis.
Strong mathematical skills related to material performance modelling.
Experience of finite element analysis.
Preferably South African Citizens please.

Key responsibilities:
Carry out research and development work on product, process and alloy development of materials for engineering applications in the field of powder metallurgy of titanium and aluminium.
Additionally, where needed, engage in research related to the processing of metal matrix composites.
