Job Title: Senior Technical Operator

Job title of manager: National Operations Manager
Essential to come from a Printing Environment working with large machinery and understanding how they work.

Educational requirements:
a) School Matric
b) Tertiary National Diploma in Electronic or Mechanical Engineering

Experience required: Approx. 3 years operations experience in a manufacturing environment:
Exposure to:
Pneumatics and rotational dynamics
Machine operations
Machine maintenance
Stores/Stock Management
Planning/Supervisory
Slitting and spooling preferable
ISO quality procedures/system preferable

On the job training: Induction, technical / machine training, product knowledge & ISO procedures.
Other requirements:
• Equipment management and control
• Able to manage health and safety within the company,
• Computer Literacy (email, MS word, MS excel, ERP system)
• Ability to liaise at all levels – externally and internally
• Aptitude for figures, details and paperwork

• Able to work with a large degree of independence, ie proactive, organised and self motivated

• Valid driver's license and own transport, preferable
• Physical strength – a job requirement is that the incumbent must be able to lift a 36kg roll of material and place onto a machine

AUTHORITY:

Raising of works tickets and complete conversion jobs on GIM (computerised stock system).

To stop any job should such operation be unsafe or deliver inferior quality products and to inform the Operations Manager of such an occurrence.
To manage the maintenance of all Operations equipment including stores equipment, vehicles and Operations machines.
Development and implementation of procedures and systems relating to Operations as well as Health and Safety through-out the Company.
To supervise Ops staff and to take any appropriate action to ensure continued workflow, to inspire and challenge staff and to provide conditions conducive to completing jobs
Use of sub-contractors for national deliveries.

ACCOUNTABILITY & RESPONSIBILITY:

For quality, throughput, housekeeping and safety in the workstations and the operations area and meet required deadlines on all jobs.
After customer services has taken orders, raising of initial works tickets and correct sourcing of stock.
Responsible for equipment and machine control in Operations, CT.

Responsible for implementation of Health and Safety as a H&S Supervisor within the Company.

MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB:

To supply orders on time to customers.
To raise initial works tickets and correct sourcing of stock.
To operate the conversion machines in an efficient manner ensuring that the highest levels of quality, productivity and customer service are maintained at all times.
To assist in stores and despatch area, when required
To ensure the correct operation of conversion equipment at all times by all Operations staff. To continually train, mentor and develop staff members to ensure this.
Maintain equipment and machines in Cape Town Operations ensuring that the highest levels of quality and productivity are maintained at all times.

Ensure that The Company is complaint with Health and Safety regulations

Distribution of stock between national stores must be planned and implemented and GIM must be monitored daily.

Required security and integrity of items must be maintained to meet (internal and external) requirements.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:

1. Planning

a. Complete conversion jobs on GIM (computerised stock system) for Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban.

b. When completing works tickets, ensure that appropriate FIFO is implemented, work towards minimising scrap and wastage and secure accurate sourcing of products.

c. Plan requirements for each job to meet required deadlines as per customer. This includes deciding which operators and machines to use as well as equipment i.e. blades, tools, masking tape, labels etc.

d. Monitor stock of all consumables (i.e. cores, tape etc.) and communicate levels to operations manager daily.

e. Advise operations manager of any potential bottlenecks or scheduling and quality problems. Work in conjunction with the senior store man to ensure that shelf space has been planned for incoming shipments and that labels have been printed for incoming stock, and that there is sufficient allocation of shelf space to ensure that like stock is kept with like stock.

f. Plan daily delivery and despatch schedules (local and national) optimising fleet, driver and subcontractor efficiency. Planning of drivers’ routes/trip sheets for despatch of all Cape Town deliveries.

g. Correct stock must be picked and placed in the appropriate Kanbans.

h. Monitor and update the performance log throughout the day to ensure that deliveries are planned accordingly and that customers are kept informed of delivery times

i. Plan in advance (wherever possible) what stock needs to be picked for conversion and/or for despatch to customers or national stores.

j. Monitor real time delivery accuracy and complete a delivery accuracy report on a monthly basis.

2. Slitting and spooling

a. Update the computer system with relevant information.

b. Ensure that all jobs are completed on time, accurately and with minimum wastage.

c. Check that the material matches the works ticket in respect of product type, dimensions, quantity and Lot Number.

d. Ensure that only one job should be at the workstation at any time.

e. Ensure that all operations are carried out in a safe manner.

f. Ensure that machines are maintained for safe operation.

g. Use the safety glove when changing or sharpening all blades.

h. Load and operate the machine according to the works instruction making sure that scrap and waste is kept to a minimum.

i. Convert/spool according to works ticket instructions i.e. tension, core size, dimensions etc.

j. Ensure that all converted/spooled stock conforms to the works ticket instructions i.e. tension, core size, dimensions etc.

k. Ensure that all the required quality checks during the job and after completion are carried out and the works ticket signed and stamped accordingly.

l. Ensure that all products, part units and waste are labelled correctly or disposed of.

m. Ensure all workstations and machines are clean.

n. Ensure all tools are in the assigned places.


3. Packing

a. Ensure assistance is provided where or when required in terms of packing.

b. Identify from the works ticket (ex conversion or stores) what material for the assigned division should be packed according to delivery schedule.

c. Ensure that all products are packed according to technical requirements as per procedures.

d. Ensure that product will not be damaged during transit or storage.

e. Ensure all appropriate labelling is applied specifying Works ticket no, customer name and any special instructions e.g. special delivery date, time, address.

f. Place the parcel in the correct despatch/return Kanban.


4. Delivery/Despatches

a. Ensure that utmost security is maintained during despatching and delivery by total control of stock movement against paperwork and random inspections of packed material and consignments on vehicles for both national and local deliveries.

b. Control drivers to ensure that delivery schedules are adhered to and that the required paperwork i.e. trip-sheets, proof of deliveries and flowsheets are completed accurately and timeously. Ensure that no deliveries to COD accounts are left without receipt of the appropriate payment.

c. Maintain vehicles in roadworthy and safe condition and ensure that vehicles are always clean and neat.

5. Equipment Control
a. Implement preventative maintenance on all machines and equipment.

b. Ensure that defective machines or equipment are immediately reported and the fault is documented in the machine maintenance book.

c. Take action to restore/fix defective machines or equipment and follow-up until satisfied that the machine or equipment is at full operational capacity. Ensure that the repair is documented in the machine maintenance book.

c. Maintain all equipment maintenance records, conduct a weekly inspection and report this to National Operations Manager.
d. Ensure that all equipment is kept clean and that whole department adheres to planned Maintenance Procedures.
6. Safety and Housekeeping

a. As the designated Health and Safety Supervisor for The Company, keep up-to-date with safety legislation, be responsible for the Health and Safety Plan and System ensure the Company wide implementation.

b. Ensuring that all operations are carried out according to safety procedures (refer Procedures Manual).

c. Ensure that all materials, equipment and tools are kept in designated areas.

d. At end of shift, ensure department is clean and all closedown procedures adhered to.

e. Ensure work areas and stores are kept clean and neat and tidy at all times.
All stock must be labelled and on a shelf at all times.

f. Overall responsibility for entire operation housekeeping. This implies that each area must be clean and neat after the completion of each action.

g. Ensure that all machines are maintained safely and in good working order.

h. Maintenance and safety schedule must be placed on every machine and be signed off.

i. Ensure use of the safety glove and or equipment when changing or sharpening blades.

j. Operational instructions must be placed on every machine

7 Quality

a. Know the procedures and processes relating to the work being done.

b. Identify and record any problem with a product, process or quality system.

c. Recommend, supervise or carry out the necessary actions to resolve any problems within The Company and/or at a customer.

d. Confirm that solutions found have been carried out and are effective.

e. Take action to prevent any non-conforming products reaching the customer.

f. Stop further work or delivery of non-conforming products until the problem is corrected.

g. Ensure that all standards are maintained and improved

h. Assist and/or serve on the Quality Team as requested, and nominate any member of the team to assist.

8. Additional Duties.

a. Assist with customer services, dispatch, IT and facilities management when required.

b. Assist with the handling of big receipts or shipments.

c. Relief for another operator during absence or when unbalanced workload exists.

d. Assist store men with physical movements or stacking as well as with cycle counts when required.

e. Work overtime when required.

f. To attend and complete training courses that the company may require you to do during or after office hours.

g. Ensure housekeeping in the dispatch store and the yard outside dispatch and clearing cardboard/pallets to appropriate areas.

h. General Administration relating to the job. This includes ensuring that all documents must be filed on a daily basis.

i. You will be required to carry out any other reasonable instruction from your manager/supervisor that is not included in your job description.
