About the Job


ECP Consulting has been contracted to recruit on behalf of the Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory (HartRAO), the only major radio astronomy observatory in Africa. The Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory is located 60km West of Johannesburg, South Africa, in a valley in the Magaliesberg hills. It is a National Facility of the National Research Foundation (NRF). The main (26m) radio telescope is equipped to operate in multiple receiving bands from 18 cm 
to 1.3 cm. A 15m antenna is presently being equipped with a dual band S/X Receiver for additional geodetic VLBI support. HartRAO is participating in the MeerKAT, CBASS, South African SKA bid projects and in the establishment of an African VLBI Network. The later through the redevelopment of redundant large
satellite antennas as radio telescopes.


An opportunity for a Senior Technician available in the Department: Engineering and Technical Support


Minimum Requirements:



  • ·B Tech: Electronic Engineering

  • ·5 years experience in installations, operations and general maintenance of appropriate electronic systems

  • ·PCB layout design, CAD

  • ·Computer literacy – Word, Spreadsheet


To your advantage would be:



  • ·B Eng: Electronic Engineering

  • ·Experience in Vacuum and Helium systems 

  • ·Experience in RF and/or Microwave Receivers

  • ·Microprocessor / FPGA software / hardware development


Skills and Attributes required:



  • ·Intimate knowledge of all technical aspects of  Analogue and Digital Electronics

  • ·Ability to work independently and as part of a team·Able and willing to ascend and work on radio telescopes

  • ·PCB layout, CAD drawing

  • ·Computer literacy – Word, Spreadsheet

  • ·Good inter-personal and communication skills

  • ·Innovative/creative ·Technical data reduction and report writing skills

  • ·Conversant with the  relevant Health & Safety regulations

  • ·Design Ability


Duties will include but are not limited to:



  • ·Development,  installation, commissioning, testing,documenting and maintenance (repair down to component level) of the systems used on radio telescopes and related equipment

  • ·Operating and maintaining complex workshop test equipment

  • ·Supervising and training HartRAO and SKA Project technicians

  • ·Working radio telescope VLBI operation night shifts as and when required (time off in lieu is given for hours worked)
