Overview
The Server Engineer will assist in the planning, design, implementation, and support of Windows Server and/or desktop platforms. This team member is responsible primarily for the assessment and optimization of Active Directory, Server and/or desktop platforms through review and assessment of user needs in their area of specialty

Responsibilities
  • Develop a thorough understanding of the ecentric technical infrastructure environment.
  • Provide internal and external customers with excellent customer service while striving to provide world-class service.
  • Effectively communicates current status of all projects, problems, and issues.
  • Proactively identifies opportunities for improvements to existing processes and for automation of time consuming tasks.
  • Plan, prioritize, and provide vision and schedules for assigned software and / or hardware changes.
  • Attend departmental, project and general meetings and effectively represent current status as appropriate.
  • Execute operational support of all operations and all associated server hardware and software.   
  • Ensure that all servers are running at optimal capacity.   
  • Study and analyse the performance and capacities of the systems and peripheral equipment/systems and prepare plans for future expansion and upgrades.   
  • Participate in company provided training and perform independent training as appropriate.
  • Resolve incident management tickets as they arise and ensure timely resolution.   
  • Provide technical support for projects as directed
  • Manage Microsoft Server and Active Directory infrastructure.
  • Lead the design, implementation and support of a highly available directory infrastructure platform.
  • Define and communicate enterprise policies, standards and position statements for new and existing Active Directory related technologies.
  • Provide 2nd and 3rd level support for Microsoft Server and Active Directory for end users, application and administration teams.
  • The candidate must be comfortable in addressing critical incidents.
  • The candidate must be willing to accommodate weekend or on-call schedules when necessary.
  • Provides systems metrics, root cause analysis and proactive monitoring and communicates any performance degradation to management.
  • Perform critical system changes after business hours.
  • Adhere to all company authored policy, procedure and standards documents.
  • Author policy, procedure and standards documents based on industry best practices and personal research and experience.
  • Develop and maintain professional network and business relationships with vendors and other business contacts.
  • Provide technical and operational support in designated technology areas.
  • Conduct new technology research in order to stay abreast of the latest developments in IT technology, trends, and knowledge, and legislation.
  • Assist with making changes to server platform designs as needed.  
  • Assist in determining the direction and enhancement of the system to meet the needs of the organization.
  • Identify and evaluate third party vendors, technology, or processes
  • Perform selected product research as directed.
  • Participate in an on-call support rotation for providing after-hours support.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

Knowledge
  • Expert level knowledge of Active Directory (Windows 2003 thru Windows 2012), DNS, OU design and management, AD Site design, Group Policy, AD security, AD certificate services, LDAP, Kerberos, Global Catalog, WINS, DHCP, DFS, FRS, AD troubleshooting, and AD recovery.
  • Design, Implement and troubleshoot complex Windows and Active Directory environments.
  • Advanced knowledge of Windows Server and Desktop operating systems.
  • Advanced knowledge of desktop and server virtualisation technologies – VMware specifically.
  • General knowledge of cross platform integration.

Experience
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in information technology.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience with advanced Active Directory Administration.
  • Minimum 7 years managing windows application servers.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred but not required.
  • Current advanced job related certifications required.
  • Experience ideally includes process improvements, working with technical experts, implementation and operations
  • Strong, proven track record of working on cross-functional and concurrent complex technology projects

  • There may be a requirement to occasionally work a flexible schedule with the possibility of working long hours.
 
Reporting line
  • This role will report to the Server Team Lead with a dotted line to the Head of Operations
