Our client currently has an opportunity for a Shaft Carpenter who will be responsible for maintaining equipment (Shaft and Water Tunnels) according to sound practices and equipment specifications.

The successful incumbent will hold a Grade 12 certificate together with a valid Permanent Blasting Certificate for Scheduled Mines / Underground Hard Rock Level 3 Certificate of Competency.


Job Description:

Monitor equipment failure and efficiency to improve trade specific equipment and systems.
Develop, modify, contract and install all types of related equipment.
Investigate, diagnose and perform maintenance and repair of equipment and machinery on the shaft and water tunnels.
Manufacture items according to diagrams and drawings when setting up equipment.
Perform inspections according to the Mine Health & Safety Act regulations, manufacturing and Company standards.
Report all defects and breakdowns to Foreman.
Responsible for collecting, handling, transporting and storing explosives.
Conduct risk assessments, underground construction and control water entering the decline.
Erect and maintain RAW’s and water tunnels.
Examine escape ways, clean and maintain change houses and underground ablution facilities.
Supervise and execute blasting operations – i.e. control explosives, prepare work face for blasting, charging of face and sites, conducting blasting and treating misfires.
Maintain Safety standards to comply with the Company safety programme.
Must be prepared to work underground and outside normal working hours, shifts, and overtime (if required).

Qualification and Experience: Desired Skills and Experience:

Grade 12
Valid Permanent Blasting Certificate for Scheduled Mines / Underground Hard Rock Level 3 Certificate of Competency
Onsetters Certificate
At least two years Shaft Carpenter experience
Previous experience as a Supervisor
Valid driver’s license
