Our client has a vacancy for a Systems Engineer in their Information Security group. The group’s research focuses on the processes, methodologies and techniques used to protect information from unauthorised access. The major drive towards the establishment of this unit revolves around the need to develop a capability on IS systems. This is also driven by the need for research and development (R&D) of technologies that can be deployed locally to secure state information without reliance on imported technologies that can be maliciously used to acquire critical information through deliberate or unintended back doors.

Qualifications, skills and experience:
A Master’s degree in electrical, electronic, computer engineering or computer science. A doctoral degree will be advantageous.
At least five years’ working experience in the engineering field involving research and development.
Must have at least three years’ experience as a systems engineer.
Project management experience will be advantageous.
Professional registration with a relevant body will be advantageous.
Experience with systems engineering tools will be advantageous.
Proven experience with the preparation of documentation (specifically specifications and proposals as well as acceptance tests) within the systems engineering framework for projects exceeding 1 mil rand in proposed value.
Proven ability to lead technical teams, ideally within a multi-disciplinary environment.
Ability to bring product development projects to finalisation.
Ability to read outside the immediate field in order to factor in diverse client/product requirements.
Ability to work independently, as well as a team within a research environment.
Strong coordination, organisation, teaming and communication abilities.
Ability to effectively direct employees.
Ability to work under pressure and time constraints.
Ability to present technical information successfully.

Key responsibilities:
Develop specifications of systems to address client requirements.
Conduct system integration and interface design.
Provide technical support during stakeholder engagements.
Execute work assignments to appropriate standards and quality systems (Implementation, test and documentation).
Coach and support assigned engineer(s) to ensure they are able to meet requirements of their work assignments.
Monitor and control assigned work scope against the project plan and effectively communicate to customers to fully define and agree project requirements.
Proactively recommend potential quality and efficiency improvements within the engineering group.
Share technical knowledge with project team, supervisor, own discipline and other engineering disciplines.
Report progress and technical problems to project team and/or research group leader.
Develop project proposals, including statements of work, budgets and work plans.
Author technical reports.
Improve systems engineering processes and tools used within the group.
Lead the implementation and ensure the timely delivery of project objectives.
Create and maintain programmatic and technical documentation to ensure efficient planning and execution (e.g. specifications such as user, functional, architectural, test and validation).
Conduct, design and develop work in the specific domain of smart card and biometrics systems.
Create business and technical use cases in order to make sure the proposed architecture and design meets business objectives.
Coordinate system development tasks to include design, integration and formal testing strategy.
Develop and complete actions in system specifications, technical and logistical requirements based on the business needs, keeping other constraints in mind, such as budget and timelines required.
Ensure that all requirements are consistent, complete, correct and operationally defined.
Ensure that robust architectures are developed.
Work with the client to make sure that the design meets reliability, performance, security and operations guidelines that are set from time to time.
Manage and document system configurations.
Contribute to the improvement of organisational processes using Capability Maturity Model Integration approaches.
Provide technical direction and mentorship to junior researchers in the group.
