Purpose:

Design, implement and research all aspects of environmental geosciences within the Council for Geoscience. Perform routine analytical and leaching tests on geo-environmental samples.

Key Responsibilities
• Development and optimisation of analytical procedures in line with ISO certification prescripts.
• Operate and maintain the following analytical equipment: Autotitrator, pH meter, EC meter and other minor laboratory instruments.
• Ensure that laboratory consumables are ordered timeously.
• Maintain critical spares level to avoid work delays.
• Assist in the development of the EGU laboratory by introducing, validating and maintaining analytical and test methods for various environmental and geoscientific investigations.
• Develop the laboratory towards ISO 17025:2005 and ISO 19001 accreditation.
• Integrate field, laboratory and modelling results and participate in the interpretation of these results.
• Participate in publishing scientific or technical papers or reports, internally to other staff members and externally at conferences or symposia.
• Conduct the day to day routine analysis in the laboratory in line with the ISO accreditation guidelines.
• Contribute and participate in innovative environmental/mining projects and lead commercial and statutory projects.
• Perform reasonable ad hoc duties at request of the organisation, within the scope of employment, which entail work within the incumbent’s ability.
• Perform environmental field investigation studies as per operational requirements.
• Perform other laboratory task when needed.

Qualifications and Experience
• BTech in Analytical Chemistry or equivalent.
• Three years’ minimum experience in an analytical laboratory environment.
• Knowledge of chemistry and sample leaching and water chemistry/analysis.
• Understanding of modern analytical equipment and laboratory procedures.
• Computer literacy.
• ISO 17025:2005 and/or ISO 9001 experience will be an added advantage.
• A valid driver’s license will be an advantage.
