SM Healthcare Placements is inviting applications from suitably qualified individuals for the position of Technician Haematology in Durban, Kwazulu Natal for an exciting role within a Clinical Laboratory Organisation in the medical field.

Purpose of Position:
• To process specimens according to set criteria and standards on all benches in the Haematology Laboratory.
• To process specimens according to set criteria and standards on all the benches in the Microbiology Laboratory
• To prepare and analyse specimens and maintain instruments in the Histology laboratory
• To provide technical support, perform routine and stat analyses of samples within the Clinical Pathology laboratory environment

The following are the qualifications, experience, knowledge and attributes requirements:

Education, Training and Experience

• Board examination as Medical Technician
• HPCSA registration as a Medical Technician
• 18 months’ experience in a Haematology/Clinical laboratory
• Knowledge of the HPCSA regulations
• National Medical Technician certificate
• 1-year experience within Microbiology medical laboratory
• Knowledge of the Health and Safety Act
• Microbiology Technical knowledge as per HPCSA regulations
• Numerical reasoning skills
• Certificate as Medical Technician (Histology Pathology)
• HPCSA registration as Medical Technician (Histology Pathology)
• 18 months experiential learning as a Learner Technician within a registered Training laboratory (Histology Pathology)
• Communication skills
• National Certificate (Medical Technician - Clinical Pathology)
• HPCSA registration as Medical Technician (Clinical Pathology)
• 18 months experiential learning as a Learner Technician within a pathology environment (Clinical Pathology)
• Understanding of pathology test procedures.
• Knowledge of instrumentation and methodologies.
• Knowledge of Quality Control.
• Basic knowledge of MS Windows
• Basic knowledge of Excel
• Basic knowledge of MS Word
• Computer skills
• Membership of the SMLTSA
• Knowledge of the Meditech system
• Training skills
• 1 year as Medical Technician in a Histology laboratory environment
• 1 year as Medical Technician in a Clinical laboratory environment

• Perform stock control tasks to ensure effective monitoring of stock usage and availability.

• Perform receiving and resulting tasks on the Meditech system in order to ensure correct handling, preparing and recording of specimen and results.
• Process specimens on the benches in order to ensure sufficient delivery of results.
• Perform Serological identification typing tasks in order to ensure effective processing and resulting of serological bacterial typings.
• Perform general tasks in order to assist with maintaining best practice within the laboratory.
• Receive and process specimens in order to ensure effective and efficient specimen flow in the laboratory.
• Perform special laboratory procedures in order to ensure timeous resulting of specimens.
• Clean and maintain laboratory in order to ensure a clean and safe work environment.
• Perform general laboratory tasks in order to ensure the effective functioning of the laboratory.
• Process routine bench work in laboratory in order to ensure efficient processing of specimens.
• Perform administration tasks in order to ensure effective administration systems in the laboratory.
• Provide technical support within laboratory in order to ensure the efficient flow of specimens and timeous resulting of specimen.
