An exciting opportunity is available for a research scientist in the fields of time frequency and photonics/photometry. The successful candidate’s responsibilities will be among other tasks research, design, development and implementation of test methods; presentation of technical papers at workshops and conferences and in local or international publications, preferably peer-reviewed; guide and train junior researchers; providing technical and scientific support to management; provide inputs and maintain laboratory plans for budget, capital, the financial systems as relevant to the areas of responsibility; ensure process consistency and effectiveness.

Key Requirements: PhD (Engineering or Physics); a strong background in Photonics and/or optics; a minimum of five years working experience in a research environment; project leadership for scientific projects, including conceiving, planning, executing and bringing to completion complex multiyear research projects; building and troubleshooting complex systems, where weak signals are detected and processed with custom and commercial electronic equipment; general programming (laboratory automation software); scientific simulation software for modelling and designing physical systems; any of the following would be an added advantage: a good publication record; networking on an international level; frequency measurement systems.

Additional Requirements: Attention to detail; thorough in completing work tasks; analytical thinking, analysing information and using logic to address work-related issues and problems; shows initiative; independence will also be required and developing one's own ways of doing things, guiding oneself with little or no supervision, and depending on oneself to get things done; being able to establish and maintain personally challenging achievement goals; apply creativity and alternative thinking to develop new ideas for work-related problems.

Remuneration: Market related and dependent on experience.
