The Climate Change Information System is a collaboration project between the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) and the South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON) which is an entity of the Department of Science and Technology. This work is part of implementing the National Climate Change Response Monitoring and Evaluation System and the Memorandum of Understanding between the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) and SAEON on Environmental Knowledge and Information Management. To undertake some of the collaboration work, SAEON requires the services of

Windows Developer – .NET, Javascript
(Based in Cape Town or Pretoria)

as an independent contractor.

Key responsibilities will include:

1. Develop MS SQL Server-based web applications, using .NET and Javascript, focusing on systems to be transferred to the Department of Environmental Affairs and integrated with the South African Risk and Vulnerability Atlas.
2. Undertake smaller JavaScript/ Python/ .NET development projects - largely aimed at service integration and user interface improvements, and configuration of user-facing applications and websites utilising a collection of components and services.

The typical profile required is

1. Good experience in systems delivery - using sustainable and documented engineering approaches.
2. Good skills in JavaScript, .NET, REST, HTML5, SQL Databases, and XML/ JSON.
3. Exposure to and experience using frameworks and libraries, including Angular, Bootstrap, Material Design (MDBootstrap, Materialize, ...)
4. Beneficial experience includes Google Apps, spatial databases and mapping technology, Python, and utilising cloud-based servers (Amazon, Google, ...)

The position is for a 1-year contract maximum and commencement will be early October 2017. The successful service provider is expected to work independently, provide equipment and software as required, and have independent office accommodation. SAEON will provide working facilities and meeting facilities as required.
