Study and Work in Ireland

Ireland is one of the best countries in Europe to experience culture as well as education. For this reason, many people from different countries find ways to study in Ireland as this gives them the chance to earn a degree recognized internationally while experiencing the best of the country.

The biggest challenge for those who wanted to study in Ireland is the tuition fee. While EU students can go through college in various universities in Ireland without any financial difficulties, students coming from non-EU countries could spend more than 5,000 Euros every year. Students also have to pay for their lodging as well as other expenses.

Work Option Available

To help students in their finances while studying, the Irish government allows students to work part time. By law, each student is only allowed to work for a maximum of 20 hours a week so that students will still have time to concentrate on their students and other extra-curricular work.

There is no limitation to the industries where a student can work part time. However, most of the available jobs are very limited and they are usually on service industry. Many small businesses especially near the campus hire students to work as part time.

Limitation on Courses

Aside from limitation on the number of hours, the Irish government has also changed the policy for courses allowed on foreign students. This doesn’t mean that any course has been limited but the government has listed the courses that could be taken by foreigners. These are usually courses that lead to a degree or language studies and the course length is no less than one year.

Advancement from Student Permit

After graduating from the intended degree, a student can ask for a Visa extension of up to six months. The extension could be granted but it cannot be renewed as the student is no longer part of any educational institution. The six months extension is often granted to students who wanted to seek local employment. Once they found employment in a local business or company, foreign students can change their current student Visa to work permit.
