I drifted into professional copywriting. My formal training? Classical ballet, specialising in choreography. Then. I discovered copywriting. And, to me, it sounded like ‘choreography with words’. With zero training, I wrote a purposefully laughable CV which landed me a full-time job at Mortimer Harvey. Over my 20-ish-year career at MH (and without once pushing for promotion but rather questioning management’s decision to suggest it each time), I moved from copywriter to senior writer, then head of copy, CD, and ECD. I loved my MH family. Gerald Harvey (fondly known as ‘Pappa G’) rolled the dice that landed me a long and rewarding career. For most of my MH life, I was the creative lead on the Absa account, caretaking the bank’s results-measured through-the-line marketing. We must’ve done something right, as 17 years is an unheard-of tenure for any advertising agency, especially within the financial services industry. I was also the CD and copywriter for DHL, Avis, Hollard, Colgate-Palmolive, Coca-Cola, Peermont, Plascon, SABC Airtime Sales, Smile Telecommunications, and many more. I resigned in 2017*, my beloved boss, ‘Pappa G’ - the heart and soul of MH passed away on 23 July 2021, and MH closed down in 2022. I now own and manage a boutique venue and guest house, and work as a freelance copywriter for former colleagues and industry contacts. I don't require a contract, will sign an NDA if need be, and can be used as a resource as and when needed, (availability dependent).
