Have been part of the power generation team ever since, in the operating department , where I rose through the ranks, to commissioning lead operator. My present job has been an eye opener, as I have subjected to working with people of different nationalities, race, culture and attitude.Commissioning steam turbine machines from construction stage, until handover to client. Witnessing construction and commissioning has developed me technically and sharpened my monitoring ability and analytical skill. Training client operators and preparing operating manuals for them. Testing plant auxiliaries from installation stage to complete system test, flushing, chemical cleaning, steam blow through and high speed flushing of low pressure and high pressure feed water systems. Starting and shutting down steam turbine as maybe required and maintaining it on load and constantly in touch with boiler operator on issues arising on unit. Suggesting modifications and upgrade on systems to engineering management where necessary and high lighting defects as they arise. Monitoring and capturing data. Issuing and cancelling plant safety documents during repair work and testing to make standby. In my previous job as a shift leader, in the coal and ash department at Kelvin Power station, was in charge of plant and operating personnel in both A and B stations. Overseeing operating activities during day to day plant operating on shift. Preparing plant for maintenance and making standby. Ensuring both personnel and plant safety and that plant is operated according operating modules. Recommending upgrade of operating modules as necessary, and modifying plant systems. Ensuring station had enough water, coal and fuel oil. Maintaining plant maintenance record,and ensuring plant spares were available before plant could be released on permit. Training my subordinates and arranging cover for sick and those going on leave. Updating operating management on plant status, and problems faced whilst on shift. Of major high light was when I suggested and led modification and upgrade B station conveyor starting and stopping interlock system which had become redundant over a long time, and subordinate culture change and an intensified training. This was a major success, as indicated by subordinates enjoying their work more and plant availability. Have been a senior unit operator, in charge of two units in a control room, unit operator, assistant unit operator and plant attendant. Enhanced my plant knowledge by doing plant operating philosophy courses, principles of power plant operating courses 1&2 with City & Guilds of London, and personnel supervision and management. Am on an open contract with General Electrics(GE) at Medupi Power Station, where we are doing the last unit of the station. Am willing to relocate to anywhere within or outside South Africa.
