For a couple of times I have been appointed as a safety officer for a company called Refinery Turnkey Projects that specifically provides the mechanical maintenance services for Sasol petrochemical shut downs every year. During my practical work as a safety officer in the shut downs I was able to discover the necessary requirements to create a healthy and safe working environment. My skills and abilities in this field have contributed a great change of enabling the mechanical activities to end with zero injuries to employees and in emphasizing the fact that there has never been a shut down which I was employed in as a safety officer that resulted in major injuries or fatalities. Due to my commitment and hard work to see that the necessary requirements to health and safety are adhered to. Most of the battles in developing a safe working environment were won during toolbox talks activities, this tusk made me experience how to utilize occupational health and safety acts effectively to practical use in my understanding of section 13.Duty to inform that states that as far as reasonably practicable, the employer shall cause every employee to be made conversant with the hazards to his health and safety attached to any work. That interpretation of the legislation made my job easier because employees were starting to understand the purpose of toolbox talk through my interpretation. By doing these I managed to boost the morale of the mechanical team and also to make them understand the benefits and the importance of working safely not forgetting to mention that they were now taking safety into consideration to every activity that was undertaken onsite.
