I am completing my MSc in synthetic and analytical chemistry, currently writing up my thesis. I have worked for the University of KwaZulu-Natal Westville campus as a laboratory demonstrator for level one chemistry for two years (teaching students lab techniques that helped them perform accurately and efficiently in the lab and as quickly as they can), and was an SI Leader (helping to bridge the gap between students and lecturers by being a peer educator while liaising with the lecturers about concerns and problems the students might have have). I was shortly appointed as a SI coordinator (to supervise SI leader conducting SI sessions in isiZulu), until I had an accident in the lab resulting in me losing my eyesight in the right (this halted my studies for a while but it did not break me). The above mentioned work experience taught me how to work with and respect young people from different backgrounds, how to get people who do not get along to work together to achieve a common goal. I obtained a distinction for my honour’s project, which was solely based on the analysis of persistent organic pollutants such as PCBs and organochlorine pesticide at different soil sediment depths at four targeted sampling points along the Umgeni River which is one of the main sources of water in the eThekwini region in KZN by conducting coring studies Companies like CSIR, C*Change and NRF have funded my research thus far. I have also received a scholarship for excellence since I obtained my BSc Honours with Cum Laude. This is evidence of my hard work, perseverance, ambition, and talent.
